8 pages; International audience; In the protected area of the Cévennes National Park (Southern France), 114 wild brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) were captured at six locations affected to different extents by historical mining and metallurgy dating from the Iron Age to Modern Times. Cadmium and lead in trout livers and muscles reflect high sediment contamination, although an age-related effect was also detected for hepatic metal concentrations. Lead isotope signatures confirm exposure to drainage from mining and metallurgical waste. Impairment of facial motility associated with contralateral hemiparesis is characteristic of pontine lesions. In the Millard-Gubler and Foville syndromes, involvement of the facial nerve is nuclear or infranuclear, resulting in a peripheral-type palsy. Conditions of pontine origin showing hyperactivity of facial muscles are facial myokymia and Brissaud’s syndrome. Brissaud and Sicard [4] reported low-frequency phasic cramplike facial contractions and contralateral hemiparesis in inflammatory brain-stem processes.

A model of combined convective and diffusive O2 transport to tissue is suggested which allows for the calculation of PO2 distributions in a cuboid tissue region with arbitrary microvascular geometries and blood flows. Carrier-facilitated O2 diffusion in the erythrocytes and in the tissue and red blood cell reaction kinetics are considered. The model is based on analytical descriptions of the PO2 fields of single erythrocytes surrounded by carrier-free layers in an infinite three-dimensional space containing an O2 carrier such as myoglobin. Muscle fibres may undergo apoptotic cell death in several neuromuscular disorders such as denervated muscle fibres in spinal muscular atrophies. We investigated DNA-fragmentation (in situ by the TUNEL-method) and expression of apoptosis-associated proteins in experimentally denervated and reinnervated rat facial muscle up to 24 weeks after surgery to evaluate the rate and time lapse of apoptotic muscle fibre loss. A bioluminescence technique for quantitative and structure-associated imaging of pyruvate

A novel bioluminescence assay has been developed for measuring pyruvate within sections of snap-frozen tissue in a quantitative manner as well as with a spatial resolution on a microscopical level. The assay was verified via HPLC and two independent photometric tests. The novel assay makes it possible to determine pyruvate concentrations in cryosections in the range of 0-5.0 micromol/g tissue (dry weight). Based on the analysis of samples of given pyruvate concentrations, the assay exhibits a recovery with a deviationor =15%. Summary For the first time, the simultaneous and bilateral occurrence of two variants of the extensors of the fingers, M. extensor digiti medii and M. extensor digitorum brevis, is reported. The extensor of the middle finger arises from the distal fourth of the radius and runs to the base of the proximal phalanx. The short extensor of the fingers arises from the metacarpal region and inserts into the dorsal aponeurosis. Both muscles are innervated by the R. profundus n. radialis.
