2015

The question of free admission has generated numerous debates, highlighting various viewpoints of professionals involved in Culture, effects on the measured volumes of attendance and on the management of museums and monuments. One question has been left aside: that of the reception of free admissionmeasures by the destined audiences. The analysis of the representations of these measures, which are found to be multiple, contradictory and not very congruent with the ideals put forth by the institutions themselves, shows the subtlety of the complex interactions between the tariff amount, the comprehension of a cultural policy, impact on the representations of museums and monuments and frequent…

Dynamics in the Field of Museums: Contemporary Challenges for Polish Museologists

2018

The aim of this text is to present and analyze the attitudes of Polish museologists towards the changes currently taking place in the field of museums. More specifically, it will focus on their opinions regarding the evolution of museums—from the traditional model, based on symbolic violence, to the contemporary model, which accents the subjectivity of the audience. Its conclusions, based on analyses of 26 qualitative interviews with employees of Polish museums, are as follows: the organizational changes taking place in Polish museums do not relieve museologists from bureaucratic work; the collections in museums distinguish them from other institutions of culture; there is a struggle …

Museum transition toward market-oriented identity: between social issues and public policy

2022

The museum as a cultural institution was created as a part of the nation-state, according to nationalism ideology, and for the transmission of the historical heritage of a particular society and culture. It resulted in organisational assumptions as rules of practices and style of operations or management. The transformation of public management in cultural institutions, such as museums, is part of the model of the “big” transformation based on the neoliberal turnaround in thinking and acting in the late twentieth century. The paper constitutes an analysis of the mechanisms of contemporary public policies of cultural institutions. It examines the role of the museum at the market-oriented lev…
