Celem artykułu jest analiza znaczenia muzeum dla społeczności lokalnej. Omawiam okoliczności, jakie wpłynęły na zmianę funkcjonowania muzeów (warunki społeczno-kulturowe, koncepcje teoretyczne, krytykę artystyczną). Przeobrażeniu stopniowo ulega misja muzeów - priorytetem nie jest jedynie kolekcja i jej ochrona, ale również, a może przede wszystkim, służba społeczeństwu i udział w zmianie społecznej.
