Dense Geometry of Music and Visual Arts: Vanishing Points, Continuous Tonnetz, and Theremin Performance
2018
The dualism between continuous and discrete is relevant in music theory as well as in performance practice of musical instruments. Geometry has been used since longtime to represent relationships between notes and chords in tonal system. Moreover, in the field of mathematics itself, it has been shown that the continuity of real numbers can arise from geometrical observations and reasoning. Here, we consider a geometrical approach to generalize representations used in music theory introducing continuous pitch. Such a theoretical framework can be applied to instrument playing where continuous pitch can be naturally performed. Geometry and visual representations of concepts of music theory and…
CubeHarmonic: A New Interface from a Magnetic 3D Motion Tracking System to Music Performance
2018
We developed a new musical interface, CubeHarmonic, with the magnetic 3D motion tracking system IM3D. This sys- tem precisely tracks positions of tiny, wireless, battery-less, and identifiable markers (LC coils) in real time. The Cube- Harmonic is a musical application of the Rubik’s cube, with notes on each little piece. Scrambling the cube, we get dif- ferent chords and chord sequences. Positions of the pieces which contain LC coils are detected through IM3D, and transmitted to the computer to recognize the status of the Rubik’s cube, that plays sounds. The central position of the cube is also measured by the LC coils located into the corners of Rubik’s cube, and, depending on the positio…

Brain Play Some psychological perspectives in flute performance training
2015
Masteroppgave utøvende musikk, klassisk- Universitetet i Agder, 2015 Both the field of psychology and that of neurology can provide important insights into the musical functions of the brain. This thesis aims to provide a pragmatic theory of how to incorporate aspects of these fields into music performance and education in a flute context. It is divided into two parts where Part I focuses on the theoretical methodologies that can be used for this purpose, including neurology, cognitive and social psychology, philosophy and how habits affect our lives. Part II combines the conclusions from Part I into a three-point ‘checklist’ that aims to provide a practical way of applying the theories to …

Have Fun with Math and Music!
2019
If abstraction makes mathematics strong, it often makes it also hard to learn, if not discouraging. If math pedagogy suffers from the lack of engaging strategies, the pedagogy of mathematical music theory must deal with the additional difficulty of double fields and double vocabulary. However, games and interdisciplinary references in a STEAM framework can help the learner break down complex concepts into essential ideas, and gain interest and motivation to approach advanced topics. Here we present some general considerations, followed by two examples which may be applied in a high-school or early college level course. The first is a musical application of a Rubik’s cube, the CubeHarmonic, …
Moyen Âge : entre ordre et désordre
2004
Progress in Using an Electronic Playing Environment. A Comparative Study between Cantors and Primary Teacher Students Specialising in Music
2012
Abstract This research was executed as self-study research in a music technology learning environment designed for teacher education. It explored the functionality of music technology teaching from the viewpoints of technical, physical, and social learning environments. Moreover, connecting music theory teaching to a notation programme was studied. The target group consisted of primary teacher students, and the control group were parish cantors. The participants kept a study log and answered questions related to the teaching and subject content. These data were analysed with qualitative analysis. Group differences were examined with Mann-Whitney's U-test. Both the beginners and experts had …
