Enhancing improvisational music therapy through the addition of resonance frequency breathing : Common findings of three single-case experimental stu…
2018
One core characteristic of active music therapy is the facilitation of emotional expression through the creation of music improvisations. In an attempt to further develop this approach, we created an enhanced form of integrative improvisational music therapy by including 10 minutes of resonance frequency breathing (RFB) at the beginning of the sessions. RFB is a type of slowbreathing known for its ability to reduce stress and support emotional regulation. This paper summarizes the common findings of three single-case experimental studies and introduces a provisional model to explain the observed effects of RFB. During the breathing itself, all three clients (two of them healthy and one diag…
Identity development meets emotional stability : transcending borders through music therapy with an intercultural group of women : a case study

Exploring the practical framework of a multicultural music therapy group for children with emotional and behavioral needs in an after-school setting
2016
Research shows that music therapy is effective in addressing therapeutic goals for groups of children with emotional and behavioral needs. However, most of the current research focuses on behavioral approaches to music therapy with children, and lacks in-depth explanations of practical frameworks surrounding the process (i.e., organizing, planning and implementing a group) for non-directive children’s music therapy groups focused on emotional and behavioral needs in the school setting. The following case study explores the practical framework surrounding a multicultural music therapy group for children with emotional and behavioral needs at an elementary school in Jyväskylä, Finland. Meaning of countertransference in a music therapy student's clinical studies - towards a professional perspective
2013
The concept of countertransference refers to the therapist's reactions to the client's inner world in therapy situation. Countertransference within therapy relationships can alternate from the therapist's obstructive reactions to positive experiences that may even guide the therapist towards purposeful interventions. In this research I study my own countertransference experience and my learning process of the meaning of countertransference. The methodology of the research is hermeneutic phenomenology and its structure follows the principles of the hermeneutic circle and of Gadamerian hermeneutic analysis. The data is composed of my self-reflections. I examine the self-reflections in the lig…

Empathy in Musical Interaction
2013
Entrainment has been linked to positive affect and pro-sociality, e.g. empathy. Empathy and entrainment are facets of the “shared manifold”, mirroring and mental simulation system allowing us to automatically share emotions and intentions, and to understand others. They are foregrounded in music, which is very efficacious in communicating emotions and intentions. We perceive the intentional, expressive motor acts behind the sounds of music. Music therapists take advantage of this and use musical interaction to work with their clients. The cognitive foundations of synchronisation have been studied extensively, but its emotional aspects only rarely and the methods of entrainment research have…
