The effect of music performance anxiety, context, modality and observers' music expertise on judgment of musical performances
2016
Music Performance Anxiety (MPA) is known to affect musicians at different levels. Recent studies have shown that anxiety can induce changes in non-verbal behaviours, and that non-verbal behaviours could affect perception and production of a musical performance. However, it remains unclear how effectively cues associated with MPA are perceived via different modalities (audiovisual, audio-only & video-only). The present study aims to investigate the impact of MPA, performing contexts and modalities on the observers’ ratings of expressivity, performance quality and inner state, and whether these ratings would be affected by the observer’s level of music expertise. Eight performers completed th…
Communicating through ancillary gestures: Exploring effects on coperformers and audiences
2020
Musicians make elaborate movements while performing, often using gestures that might seem extraneous. To explore these movements, we motion-captured and audio-recorded different pairings of clarinetists and pianists performing Brahms’ Clarinet Sonata No. 1 with two manipulations: (a) allowing the performers full vs. no visual feedback, and (b) allowing the performers full vs. partial auditory feedback (i.e., the clarinetist could not hear the pianist). We found that observer ratings of audio–visual point-light renditions discriminated between manipulations and refined this insight through subsequent audio-alone and visual-alone experiments, providing an understanding of each modality’s cont…
Preparing an emotionally expressive vocal performance
2018
This paper explores the processes, strategies, and methods used when preparing an expressive vocal performance from the point-of-view of the artist. The study tracked the development and performance preparation of 13 university students studying classical voice performance or music education. Participants were asked to choose one unfamiliar piece from their repertoire and complete three surveys administered at the beginning, middle, and end of their study term. Each survey was geared toward the participants’ level of preparation and pertained to their approaches for learning new repertoire, the application of constructive criticism from peers and instructors, and experiences during and afte…
Relationships Between Audio and Movement Features, and Perceived Emotions in Musical Performance
2023
A core aspect of musical performance is communicating emotional and expressive intentions to the audience. Recognition of the musician's intentions is constructed from a combination of visual and auditory performance cues, as well as compositional features. The current study attempted to quantify these contributions by measuring relationships between ratings of perceived emotion, and motion and auditory performance features. A pianist and violinist with advanced degrees in music performance individually performed four short western tonal pieces. The musicians were tasked with performing the pieces while invoking different expressive intentions: sad, happy, angry, and as a control, deadpan. …
Musiikkia koulun juhliin : "että mahdollisimman moni pystyisi osallistumaan itselle sopivalla tavalla"
2016
Keskeisenä tavoitteena tutkimuksellani on tuoda kasvattajille tietoa musiikkiesitysten kasvatuksellisista mahdollisuuksista. Teoriaosuudessa tarkastelen Perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelmaa (2014), koulun juhlia ja musiikkiesityksiin ja juhliin liittyviä teemoja. Luonteeltaan tutkimus on laadullinen tutkimus, jossa aineisto hankittiin teemahaa…
