Women and Sainthood: the Body as an Expression and Manifestation of Divine Gifts. The Case of Blessed Inés of Benigànim

The body and the feminine are highly linked concepts into early modern mentalities. Women are considered to be more determined by their own body, a condition that would make them more imperfect, especially according to the ecclesiastical discourse. However, many religious women could take advantage of this «unavoidable» bond, mainly during the Baroque period, and through the mystical phenomenon. Among these women, we will highlight Blessed Inés of Benigànim, a valencian nun from the 17th century whose case will allow us to analyze corporal, feminine and spiritual bonds through different phenomena such as ecstasies, mortifications or relics.

Using Francesco Zambon's recent Metamorfosi del Graal as his starting point, the author undertakes an analysis on the importance of the Graal in Western mystical, philosophical and literary traditions throughout time, from the impact of the medieval Graal stories on the matière de Bretagne and beyond (Troyes, Boron), to the appeal of this myth in modern times, including its occurrence on Richard Wagner, Martin Heidegger, Simone Weil, Italo Calvino and Umberto Eco.

The author attempts to interpret two paintings by Caspar David Friedrich with the motif of the hero turned with the back to the spectator. The former is one of his most renown works entitled Wanderer above the Sea of Fog also known as Wanderer Above the Mist, the latter, a slightly later work Woman at a Window – the example of a frequently used open widow motif in the iconography of Romanticism. The differences that decide on the meaning of these two canvases – as the author argues – is the gender of the created personas and the place from which they perceive the world.

The official literary debut of Tomasz August Olizarowski - highly praised by the first critics - is considered to be a short book of poetry published in 1836 in Kraków, containing two verse novels: Zawerucha. Powieść ukraińska (Zawerucha. Ukrainian novel) and Bruno. Meanwhile, Kórnik Library Stores a booklet signed with the poets name containing two lyrical series of psalms and sonnets, as well as a dumka, probably published as early as 1832 in Lviv. Resum: El catàleg titulat Lletraferides modernes. Catàleg de les escriptores valencianes dels segles XVI-XVIII (Herrero 2009) suposava un punt de partida en la compilació de «lletraferides» valencianes de l’Edat Moderna. Aquest ajudà a rescatar els seus noms, però el major handicap radica en la diversitat en la localització física dels textos.
