Drastic innovation reduces firms’ incentives to create divisions

I study a game in which two firms create independent divisions, then they choose whether to do R&D so as to reduce their divisions’ marginal costs, and then the divisions compete in the market. I provide necessary and sufficient conditions under which the game has an equilibrium in pure strategies, and I show that the game has an equilibrium only if each firm threatens that if the rival creates more divisions it will use R&D to foreclose the market. The case we find in the literature, in which firms flood the market with their divisions, should happen only in industries with low returns to R&D.

Probabilistic Flood Hazard Mapping Using Bivariate Analysis Based on Copulas

This study presents a methodology to extract probabilistic flood hazard maps in an area subject to flood risk, taking into account uncertainties in the definition of design hydrographs. Particularly, the authors present a new method to produce probabilistic inundation and flood hazard maps in which the hydrological input (i.e., synthetic flood design event) to a 2D hydraulic model has been obtained by using a bivariate statistical analysis (copulas) to generate flood peak discharges and volumes. Using Francesco Zambon's recent Metamorfosi del Graal as his starting point, the author undertakes an analysis on the importance of the Graal in Western mystical, philosophical and literary traditions throughout time, from the impact of the medieval Graal stories on the matière de Bretagne and beyond (Troyes, Boron), to the appeal of this myth in modern times, including its occurrence on Richard Wagner, Martin Heidegger, Simone Weil, Italo Calvino and Umberto Eco.

Promocijas darbs sniedz ieskatu latviešu mitoloģijas vizualizācijas vēsturē, analizējot faktorus, kas ietekmējuši vizuālos priekšstatus par mitoloģiskiem tēliem un motīviem. Pētījums ir saistīts ar teksta uzbūves struktūras semantikas jautājumiem, un folkloras teksts ar tajā iekļauto mitoloģisko tēmu tiek skatīts kā dekontekstualizēta verbālā teksta vienība, kas vizuālās mākslas kontekstā ieguvusi jaunu simbolisko nozīmi. Myths in microfinance

Microfinance – the provision of financial services to the poor – is high on the public agenda. We discuss and evaluate three myths regarding microfinance based on new data from rated microfinance institutions (MFIs). The first myth is that an efficient MFI needs to be shareholder owned; second that its governance should first and foremost address the potential conflict between owners and managers; and third that MFIs are drifting away from their poorer customers towards serving the wealthier. The data do not support any of these myths. We conclude that microfinance is a viable business model.
