We have translated and annotated an extended review from "Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine" reporting on the publication, in English translation, of "Promenade de Dieppe aux montagnes d'Écosse" by Charles Nodier ("Promenade from Dieppe to the Mountains of Scotland", Edinburg, Blackwood, London, Cadell, 1822). The reference of the original article is as follows: "Nodier's Promenade", Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine", march 1822, vol. XI (January - June 1822).
2008
This article emphasizes the decisive role played by Antoni de Bofarull and Víctor Balaguer in constructing the ideas and imagery which would feed Catalanist thought as well as their role in creating a Catalan national mythology. The analysis centres on the activities of these two writers from the 1840s to the 1860s, which fostered a better understanding among Catalans of their own history and which, above all, provided the foundation on which Catalonia could be characterized as an intrinsically democratic country. This said, they also gave importance to Catalan medieval institutions (and to those who defended them when any king tried to devalue them) as well as justifying the rebellious cha…
Post-Supernatural Cultures: There and Back Again
2020
The abandonment of supernatural religious beliefs and rituals seems to occur quite easily in some contexts, but post-supernaturalist cultures require a specific set of conditions that are difficult to produce and sustain on a large scale and thus are historically rare. Despite the worldwide resurgence of supernaturalist religion, some subcultures reliably produce people who deny the existence of supernatural entities. This social phenomenon has evoked competing explanations, many of which enjoy empirical support. We synthesize six of the most influential social-science explanations, demonstrating that they provide complementary perspectives on a complex causal architecture. We incorporate t…
Postcolonial Ghosts / Fantômes Postcoloniaux
2009
As liminal beings, ghosts seem particularly appropriate to define, question or challenge hybrid cultures where several, seemingly irreconcilable, identities coexist. The present volume wonders how they manifest themselves in the English-speaking world, and whether there is a specifically postcolonial kind of haunting. The 22 articles deal with textual, translational or historical ghosts, and take us to Canada, Australia, Africa, India or the Caribbean. Poems by Gerry Turcotte literally haunt the volume, which thus juxtaposes theory and practice in a dynamic and fruitful way.
Flood pattern changes in the rivers of the Baltic countries
2015
Estimation of both the frequency and variation of spring floods is a key issue for the assessment and management of flood risks. Changes in river floods in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have been investigated in few national studies. However, there are no studies of the changes of flood patterns by using a common methodology for the rivers of this region. In this study flood pattern changes in the rivers of the Baltic countries were estimated applying trend and frequency analysis for the periods of 1922–2010, 1922–1960, 1961–2010 and 1991–2010, i.e. for the whole spring flood data sets, periods before and after 1960 (this year was considered as the beginning of the remarkable climate change…
