The Italian reception of Benda’s «Ariadne auf Naxos» and «Medea»: fascination and compromise

2016

The monodramas “Ariadne auf Naxos” and “Medea” by the Czech composer Jiří Antonín Benda had an interesting and little known circulation in Italy, where they were translated, performed and adapted to local taste. Both the works were performed in Naples, in 1783 and in 1790 respectively, thanks to Norbert Hadrava, an officer in the Austrian army with a great passion for German music. The article demonstrates that Hadrava presented the two pièces on the stage of Teatro de’ Fiorentini with the original music by Benda, obtaining a large success. A manuscript score of “Medea” now in the library of the Conservatorio San Pietro a Majella in Naples is examined, as it is likely connected to the Neapo…

2017

This text offers to analyse Juan José Campanella’s picture El secreto de sus ojos (2009) connecting it with its coherence or distance in respect to traditional codes of melodrama. The male and sometimes ironic focus on pathetic possibilities seems to present it as an inverted melodrama. The love story seems to be pushed into the background by the investigation of a criminal case in pre-dictatorial context, whereas in actual fact, the three levels of the synopsis intertwine to build the framework’s logic. Regarding the Hollywood remake of the picture will allow us to evaluate the relationship of each one with the national imaginative world, History and the concept of justice. Through this re…

2014

This article examines the relationship between fiction and reality in the opera according to the approach of Rousseau and Diderot. The ambiguous and contradictory definition of this relationship brought Rousseau to remove the singing from the opera and to invent a new genre, the "mélodrame". It was a very paradoxical solution that Diderot could have shared as this article tries to prove.
