Internalismin ja eksternalismin välisellä erottelulla on nykyepistemologiassa keskeinen asema, ja käsiteparia käytetään myös mielentilojen sisältöä koskevissa keskusteluissa. Erottelun keskeinen ajatus on yksinkertainen. Internalismi esittää, että intentionaalinen mielentila (havainto, uskomus ja niin edelleen) voidaan identifioida ottamatta subjektin suhdetta ulkomaailmaan millään tavalla huomioon.
