Who Dares to Wear Trousers? Adoption of a New Fashion by Finnish Women 1920–1980

Trousers have traditionally been men’s clothing that women have not been allowed to wear. In this article, I study the history of women’s wearing of trousers in the twentieth-century Finnish context by analysing women’s own memories and experiences of the trouser trend. My research material consists of written reminiscences, which I use, first, to reconstruct the social and cultural factors that framed women’s choices. Second, I approach their personal preferences and choices by analysing their narrative identities in the context of dress. Abstract. Osteoporotic hip fracture is a serious clinical event associated with high morbidity and mortality. Understanding femoral growth patterns is important for promoting bone health in the young and preventing fractures in later life. In this study, growth patterns of areal bone mineral density (aBMD) and geometric properties of the proximal femur were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (GE Lunar Prodigy, USA). They were studied in 251 girls from premenarche (11.2±0.7 yrs) to late adolescence (18.3±1.1 yrs), and compared to their premenopausal mothers (n=128, aged 44.9±4.1 yrs) and postmenopausal grandmothers (n=128, aged 70.0±6.3 yrs). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of high-impact exercise on bone mineral mass and strength, and on knee cartilage composition in postmenopausal women with mild knee osteoarthritis (OA). In addition, the association between knee OA and femoral neck bone structural characteristics in women with mild knee radiographic OA and those without radiographic knee OA was studied. A cross-cultural examination of fat women’s experiences: Stigma and gender in North American and Finnish culture

In this manuscript, the voices of women of size in North America and Finland indicate that there is a shared experience of being fat. Based on cross-cultural analysis of our respective empirical findings, we argue that there is a shared Western fat lived experience that perpetuates a stigmatized gendered landscape of living with a fat body. The emergent themes tended to revolve around two similar contradictions—the phenomenon of hyper(in)visibility and a belief their fatness is a temporary or liminal state—both of which lead to an internalization of fat hatred. We argue that these findings stem from the tremendous stigma and mistreatment that both samples of women face in their daily lives.…
