Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disease associated with pain and loss of functional capacity. The management of knee OA is multifaceted and covers the whole OA continuum from injury prevention to the end stage of the disease. My doctoral dissertation examines women’s memory narratives of paid labour during the Winter War (1939–1940) and the Continuation War (1941–1945, including the Lapland War) and in the years of rebuilding in Finland until early 1950s. As an ethnologist, I am interested in the personal level of everyday life and experiences of work. My main interest lies in the meanings women give to paid labour. Tutkimuksen tehtävänä on selvittää köyhän yksineläjänaisen kokemuksia ja rooleja. Pohjoismaisen naisystävällisen hyvinvointivaltion piti olla naiselle paras suoja köyhyyttä vastaan, mutta 1990-luvun laman jälkeen lisääntynyt köyhyys koskettaa kasvavassa määrin myös naisia. Tässä tutkimuksessa syvennytään köyhyyteen laadullisin menetelmin, jotta voidaan ymmärtää, miten köyhä itse kokee köyhyyden. Naisen normin mukaiset roolit ovat äiti, vaimo ja työntekijä. Young women’s contradictory expectations and their perceived capabilities for future work-family reconciliation in Finland

This paper explores young women’s expectations on future work-family reconciliation in Finland, a Nordic country well-known for the promotion of gender equality. Utilising Sen’s capabilities approach, we content-analysed thirty individual interviews to identify differences in women’s expectations and their perceived capabilities in future work and care. The results showed that irrespective of their labour market status and educational attainment, the women’s expectations were contradictory, reflecting a current Finnish gender culture that embraces both the ideal of shared parenthood and the primacy of maternal care.
