Työ käsittelee naisen asemaa Skotlannissa vuosina 1752–1769 oikeuslähteiden näkökulmasta. Aineistona on käytetty Skotlannin korkeimman siviilioikeuden Court of Sessionin oikeudenkäyntipöytäkirjoja kyseiseltä ajanjaksolta. Aineisto koostuu pääosin sukulaisten välisistä perintöriidoista, avioliiton todistamistapauksista ja elatukseen sekä aviottomien lasten huoltajuuteen liittyvistä tapauksista. Toisena tärkeänä lähteenä on kaksi aikakaudella kirjoitettua lakiteosta, Lordi Banktonin An institute of the laws of Scotland in civil rights ja John Erskinen The principles of the law of Scotland. The introduction of women’s suffrage in 1906 and the election of the first female members to parliament made Finland an object of international attention. Contemporary cross-national comparisons were common, and there was a tendency to compete and evaluate each other. In Finland, many women activists and some male politicians, too, felt that they had to prove women’s political competence and hence actively communicated the experiences of women’s suffrage struggle internationally. Abroad, comparisons were exploited either to support women’s suffrage or to demonstrate its evil consequences, depending on party affiliation. The purpose of my study is to examine how female skiers are represented in the texts of a Finnish sports magazine, Urheilulehti, and how these representations have changed during the examination period from 1905 to 2010. Relying on Judith Butler’s ideology of gender performativity, I analyse the representations of female skiers from the perspective of promoting the traditional female norm and simultaneously from the perspective of breaking and reforming it.
