A solar assisted seasonal borehole thermal energy system for a non-residential building in the Mediterranean area

2019

Abstract Solar heating and cooling systems are reliable and feasible solutions among renewable energy technologies. Indeed, solar thermal devices help reduce primary energy consumption and can reduce electricity demand, thus representing one of the best options for satisfying heating and/or cooling energy supply. The Borehole Thermal Energy Storage (BTES) represents one of the best promising option among the various storage technologies, because the size of the storage can be easily extended by drilling additional boreholes and simply connecting the pipes to the existing boreholes; the overall energy efficiency of this system is about 40–60%. In this paper, the authors present an applicatio…

Energy Policies and Sustainable Management of Energy Sources

2017

Sustainability of current energy policies and known mid-term policies are analised in their multiple facets. First an overview is given about the trend of global energy demand and energy production, analysing the share of energy sources and the geographic distribution of demand, on the basis of statistics and projections published by major agencies. The issue of sustainability of the energy cycle is finally addressed, with specific reference to systems with high share of renewable energy and storage capability, highlighting some promising energy sources and storage approaches.

Transition to turbulence in serpentine pipes

2017

Abstract The geometry considered in the present work (serpentine pipe) is a sequence of U-bends of alternate curvature. It is characterized by pipe diameter, d = 2a and bend diameter, D = 2c. The repeated curvature inversion forces the secondary flow pattern, typical of all flows in curved ducts, to switch between two mirror-like configurations. This causes (i) pressure drop and heat or mass transfer characteristics much different from those occurring either in a straight pipe or in a constant-curvature pipe, and (ii) an early loss of stability of the base steady-state flow. In the present work, four values of the curvature δ = a/c (0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5) were considered. For each value of …

Technical Rules for Connecting PV Systems to the Distribution Grid: A Critical Comparison of the Italian and Vietnamese Frameworks

2018

In the last two decades, starting from the Kyoto protocol, decarbonization has promoted worldwide the rise of distributed generation from renewable energy sources. Currently, Vietnam is still showing a strong dependence on fossil fuels but with a great interest in investing in renewable, especially in photovoltaic (PV) systems. In this paper, the current Vietnamese technical and administrative framework for the connection of PV systems to the power grid is presented and critically compared to the Italian one, in order to define the bases for future cooperation in distributed generation and renewable sectors.

Sea water desalination and energy consumption: A case study of wave energy converters (WEC) to desalination applications in sicily

2016

Recent studies about interactions among energy and water are considered as a new field of research. As almost all energy generation processes require significant amounts of water, and water requires energy for treatment and transport, so these two resources are inextricably linked. The main aim of this work is a presentation of the use of renewable energy for desalination plants in Sicily: in particular exploitation of wave energy into electrical energy necessary for water treatment. Desalination is the most energy intensive water treatment technology but it could be solution for many problems in water supply for areas with chronic debt of water. The aim of this work is a description of a s…

Convergence of direct recursive algorithm for identification of Preisach hysteresis model with stochastic input

2015

We consider a recursive iterative algorithm for identification of parameters of the Preisach model, one of the most commonly used models of hysteretic input-output relationships. The classical identification algorithm due to Mayergoyz defines explicitly a series of test inputs that allow one to find parameters of the Preisach model with any desired precision provided that (a) such input time series can be implemented and applied; and, (b) the corresponding output data can be accurately measured and recorded. Recursive iterative identification schemes suitable for a number of engineering applications have been recently proposed as an alternative to the classical algorithm. These recursive sc…

Enhancing the sound absorption of small-scale 3D printed acoustic metamaterials based on Helmholtz resonators

2018

Acoustic metamaterials have recently become of interest for their ability to attenuate sound by breaking the mass-density law. In this paper, acoustic metamaterials based on Helmholtz resonators and capable of attenuating sound up to 30 dB are fabricated for sound absorption applications in the small scale. The proposed metamaterials are subwavelength at a factor of $\lambda /12$ with respect to the lateral dimension of the units. The directional response due to the position of the acoustic source on the sound attenuation provided by the metamaterial is investigated by controlling the location of a loudspeaker with a robot arm. To enhance and broaden the absorption bands, structural modific…

Aircraft wing rock oscillations suppression by simple adaptive control

2020

Abstract Roll angular motion of the modern aircraft operating in non-linear flight modes with a high angle of attack often demonstrates the limit cycle oscillations, which is commonly known as the wing rock phenomenon. Wing rock dynamics are represented by a substantially non-linear model, with parameters varying over a wide range, depending on the flight conditions (altitude, Mach number, payload mass, etc.) and angle of attack. A perspective approach of the wing rock suppression lies in the adaptation methods. In the present paper an application of the simple adaptive control approach with the Implicit Reference Model (IRM) is proposed and numerically studied. The IRM adaptive controller …

Optimality Conditions for Non-Qualified Parabolic Control Problems

1994

We consider parabolic state constrained optimal control problems where the usual Slater condition is not necessarily satisfied. Instead, a weaker interiority property is assumed. Optimality conditions with a Lagrange multiplier are given. As an application we present an augmented Lagrangian algorithm. Numerical test results are included.
