Influence of electrodeposition techniques on Ni nanostructures
2008
Abstract Different Ni nanostructure arrays were fabricated by pulsed electrodeposition from a Watts bath inside the pores of anodic alumina membrane (AAM) templates. Under a trapezoidal waveform of potential, consisting of fast linear sweeps between 0 and −3 V (SCE) interleaved by delay times at 0 (10 s) and −3 V (0.1 s), Ni nanowires were grown. The rate of nanowires growth was constant up to 60 min of deposition. For longer times, the growth of nanowires was not uniform, and after about 180 min some nanowires reached the template surface exposed to the electrolyte. Under square potential pulses between the same potentials (pulse length 1 s), nanotubes of Ni are obtained. Morphological ana…
Impact and effectiveness of risk mitigation strategies on the insurability of nanomaterial production: evidences from industrial case studies.
2014
Workers involved in producing nanomaterials or using nanomaterials in manufacturing plants are likely to have earlier and higher exposure to manufactured/engineered nanomaterials (ENM) than the general population. This is because both the volume handled and the probability of the effluence of ‘free’ nanoparticles from the handled volume are much higher during a production process than at any other stage in the lifecycle of nanomaterials and nanotechnology‐enabled products. Risk assessment (RA) techniques using control banding (CB) as a framework for risk transfer represents a robust theory but further progress on implementing the model is required so that risk can be transferred to insuranc…

Highly selective detection of Epinephrine at oxidized Single-Wall Carbon Nanohorns modified Screen Printed Electrodes (SPEs)
2014
Oxidized Single-Wall Carbon Nanohorns (o-SWCNHs) were used, for the first time, to assemble chemically modified Screen Printed Electrodes (SPEs) selective towards the electrochemical detection of Epinephrine (Ep), in the presence of Serotonine-5-HT (S-5HT), Dopamine (DA), Nor-Epineprhine (Nor-Ep), Ascorbic Acid (AA), Acetaminophen (Ac) and Uric Acid (UA). The Ep neurotransmitter was detected by using Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV), in a wide linear range of concentration (2-2500 μM) with high sensitivity (55.77 A M(-1) cm(-2)), very good reproducibility (RSD% ranging from 2 to 10 for different SPEs), short response time for each measurement (only 2s) and low detection of limit (LOD=0.…
Ni alloy nanowires for alkaline electrolysers
In recent years, the interest towards green hydrogen has drastically increased due to the global decarbonization process. Green hydrogen is obtained by water electrolysis using only electricity from renewable sources. It is considered one of the best storage systems in terms of environmental sustainability but not in economic ones. Nowadays, the research is focused on improving the Alkaline Water Electrolysis (AE) to reduce the cost of production. An approach to improve AE performance is based on nanostructured electrodes characterized by high electrocatalytic activity due to the very high surface area. In fact, the development of more efficient electrolysers with low-cost electrode-electro…
Nanoassemblies Based on Supramolecular Complexes of Nonionic Amphiphilic Cyclodextrin and Sorafenib as Effective Weapons to Kill Human HCC Cells
2015
Sorafenib (Sor), an effective chemiotherapeutic drug utilized against hepatocellular carcinoma (HOC), robustly interacts with nonionic amphiphilic cyclodextrin (aCD, SC6OH), forming, in aqueous solution, supramolecular complexes that behave as building blocks of highly water-dispersible colloidal nanoassemblies. SC6OH/Sor complex has been characterized by complementary spectroscopic techniques, such as UV-vis, steady-state fluorescence and anisotropy, resonance light scattering and H-1 NMR. The spectroscopic evidences and experiments carried out in the presence of an adamantane derivative, which competes with drug for CD cavity, agree with the entrapment of Sor in aCD, pointing out the role…
Lipid nanocarriers containing sorafenib inhibit colonies formation in human hepatocarcinoma cells
2015
Here, the potential of two nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) for controlled release of sorafenib was evaluated. The obtained systems showed characteristics suitable as drug delivery systems for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) through parenteral administration. The use of a mixture between a solid lipid (tripalmitin) with a liquid lipid (Captex 355 EP/NF or Miglyol 812) to prepare NLC systems could give a higher drug loading capacity and a longer term stability during storage than that obtained by using only solid lipids. The obtained nanoparticles showed a nanometer size and high negative zeta potential values. Scansion electron microscopy (SEM) of the sorafenib loaded NLC…
Copper nanowire array as highly selective electrochemical sensor of nitrate ions in water
2020
Contamination of water with nitrate ions is a significant problem that affects many areas of the world. The danger from nitrates is not so much their toxicity, rather low, as their transformation into nitrites and in particular into nitrosamines, substances considered to be a possible carcinogenic risk. For this reason, European legislation has set the maximum permissible concentration of nitrates in drinking water at 44 mg/l. Thus, it is clear that a continuous monitoring of nitrate ions is of high technological interest but it must be rapid, easy to perform and directly performed in situ. Electrochemical detection is certainly among the best techniques to obtain the above requirements. In…
Nanostructuring and strengthening of LiF crystals by swift heavy ions: AFM, XRD and nanoindentation study
2012
Abstract Modifications of the structure and micromechanical properties of LiF crystals under high-fluence irradiation (10 11 –10 13 ions cm −2 ) with swift C, Ti, Au and U ions of the specific energy of 11.1 MeV/u have been studied. In the case of heavy ions (U, Au), the AFM and SEM results reveal the bulk nanostructure consisting of columnar grains with nano-scale dimensions (50–100 nm). For lighter C ions the structure enriched with prismatic dislocation loops has been observed. High-resolution XRD reciprocal space maps for nano-structured LiF expose a mosaic-type structure with low-angle boundaries between grains.
Mechanical properties of nanostructured carbon layers grown by CVD and PLD techniques
2010
Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and chemical vapour deposition (CVD) have been proven to be among the most successful techniques for growing the entire spectrum of carbon films, which can be used in a wide range of technical applications. Here an investigation has been performed to explore the effect of different growing techniques (PLD and CVD) and process parameters (such as deposition time and substrate type) on the films' morphology and mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of the grown thin films were characterised by means of nano/micro indentation and scratch test techniques. It was observed that the thickness of the Al2O3 interlayer (between the Fe catalyst nanoparticles an…
