Continuum and discrete excitation spectrum of single quantum rings

Photoluminescence and excitation of the photoluminescence spectroscopy has been performed in single InGaAs self-assembled quantum rings embedded in a field effect structure device. To determine their electronic structure, bias-dependent optical transitions have been analyzed both, for individual quantum rings, and for the averaged ensemble. Our results are compared with a theoretical model, and also with results reported by other authors studying similar nanostructures.

Biosilicification of loricate choanoflagellate: organic composition of the nanotubular siliceous costal strips of Stephanoeca diplocostata.

SUMMARY Loricate choanoflagellates (unicellular, eukaryotic flagellates; phylum Choanozoa) synthesize a basket-like siliceous lorica reinforced by costal strips (diameter of approximately 100 nm and length of 3 μm). In the present study, the composition of these siliceous costal strips is described, using Stephanoeca diplocostata as a model. Analyses by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), coupled with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), indicate that the costal strips comprise inorganic and organic components. Abstract This work aims to provide a critical survey of the extensive literature concerning the potential applications of nanostructured mixed oxides for environmental remediation. In particular, our attention was focused on the feasibility to employ these materials as photocatalysts for the elimination of toxic organic pollutants contained in water and wastewater. The advantages and perspectives of the various nanocomposites are briefly discussed.

Abstract High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a nonhistone protein secreted by airway epithelial cells in hyperinflammatory diseases such as asthma. In order to down-regulate HMGB1 expression in airway epithelial cells, siRNA directed against HMGB1 was delivered through nanocomplexes based on a cationic copolymer of poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)- d,l -aspartamide (PHEA) by using H441 cells. We report the preparation of single-layer layered double hydroxide (LDH) two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets by exfoliation of highly crystalline NiAl-NO3 LDH. Next, these unilamellar moieties have been incorporated layer-by-layer (LbL) into a poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)/LDH nanosheet multilayer ultrathin film (UTF). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible light (UV-vis), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) profiles have been used to follow the uniform growth of the UTF. The use of a magnetic LDH as the cationic component of the multilayered architecture enables study of the resulting magnetic properties of the UTFs.
