Cellular Mechanisms of Subplate-Driven and Cholinergic Input-Dependent Network Activity in the Neonatal Rat Somatosensory Cortex

2008

Early coordinated network activity promotes the development of cortical structures. Although these early activity patterns have been recently characterized with respect to their developmental, spatial and dynamic properties, the cellular mechanisms by which specific neuronal populations trigger coordinated activity in the neonatal cerebral cortex are still poorly understood. Here we characterize the cellular and molecular processes leading to generation of network activity during early postnatal development. We show that the somatosensory cortex of newborn rats expresses cholinergic-driven calcium transients which are synchronized within the deeply located subplate. Correspondingly, endogen…

Haploinsufficiency of Tsc2 Leads to Hyperexcitability of Medial Prefrontal Cortex via Weakening of Tonic GABAB Receptor-mediated Inhibition.

2020

Abstract Loss-of-function mutation in one of the tumor suppressor genes TSC1 or TSC2 is associated with several neurological and psychiatric diseases, including autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). As an imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission, E/I ratio is believed to contribute to the development of these disorders, we investigated synaptic transmission during the first postnatal month using the Tsc2+/− mouse model. Electrophysiological recordings were performed in acute brain slices of medial prefrontal cortex. E/I ratio at postnatal day (P) 15–19 is increased in Tsc2+/− mice as compared with wildtype (WT). At P25–30, facilitated GABAergic transmission reduces E/I rati…

Polydimethylsiloxane composites containing 1,2-naphtoquinone 4-sulphonate as unique dispositive for estimation of casein in effluents from dairy indu…

2015

A unique dispositive to determine casein which is the most abundant protein in dairy sewages has been proposed. In this sensing technology, the derivatization reagent 1,2-naphtoquininone 4-sulphonate (NQS) is embedded into a polydimethylsiloxane-tetraethylortosilicate-SiO2 nanoparticles composite (PDMS-TEOS-SiO2NPs). When the composite is immersed into the samples, casein is extracted from the solution and derivatized inside the PDMS matrix after 10 min at 100°C. The sensing support changes its color from yellow to orange depending on the casein concentration. Quantitative analysis can be carried out by measuring the absorbance with a reflection probe or by image-processing tool (GIMP). Thi…

Sequence Learning in a Single Trial: A Spiking Neurons Model Based on Hippocampal Circuitry.

2020

ABSTRACTIn contrast with our everyday experience using brain circuits, it can take a prohibitively long time to train a computational system to produce the correct sequence of outputs in the presence of a series of inputs. This suggests that something important is missing in the way in which models are trying to reproduce basic cognitive functions. In this work, we introduce a new neuronal network architecture that is able to learn, in a single trial, an arbitrary long sequence of any known objects. The key point of the model is the explicit use of mechanisms and circuitry observed in the hippocampus, which allow the model to reach a level of efficiency and accuracy that, to the best of our…

Detecting Bridge Anaphora

2017

The paper presents one of most important issues in natural language processing (NLP), namely the automated recognition of semantic relations (in this case, bridge anaphora). In this sense, we propose to recognize automatically, as accurately as possible, this type of relations in a literary corpus (the novel Quo Vadis), knowing that the diversity and complexity of relations between entities is impressive. Furthermore, we defined and classified the bridge anaphora type relations based on annotation conventions. In order to achieve the main goal, we developed a computational instrument, BAT (Bridge Anaphora Tool), currently still in a test (and implicitly an improvable) version. This study is…

Topology of synaptic connectivity constrains neuronal stimulus representation, predicting two complementary coding strategies

2022

In motor-related brain regions, movement intention has been successfully decoded from in-vivo spike train by isolating a lower-dimension manifold that the high-dimensional spiking activity is constrained to. The mechanism enforcing this constraint remains unclear, although it has been hypothesized to be implemented by the connectivity of the sampled neurons. We test this idea and explore the interactions between local synaptic connectivity and its ability to encode information in a lower dimensional manifold through simulations of a detailed microcircuit model with realistic sources of noise. We confirm that even in isolation such a model can encode the identity of different stimuli in a lo…

Cryptanalysis of Knapsack Cipher Using Ant Colony Optimization

2018

Ant Colony Optimization is a search metaheuristic inspired by the behavior of real ant colonies and shown their effectiveness, robustness to solve a wide variety of complex problems. In this paper, we present a novel Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) based attack for cryptanalysis of knapsack cipher algorithm. A Cipher-text only attack is used to discover the plaintext from the cipher-text. Moreover, our approach allows us to break knapsack cryptosystem in a minimum search space when compared with other techniques. Experimental results prove that ACO can be used as an effective tool to attack knapsack cipher.

Single neuron binding properties and the magical number 7

2008

When we observe a scene, we can almost instantly recognize a familiar object or can quickly distinguish among objects differing by apparently minor details. Individual neurons in the medial temporal lobe of humans have been shown to be crucial for the recognition process, and they are selectively activated by different views of known individuals or objects. However, how single neurons could implement such a sparse and explicit code is unknown and almost impossible to investigate experimentally. Hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons could be instrumental in this process. Here, in an extensive series of simulations with realistic morphologies and active properties, we demonstrate how n radial (ob…
