Survey on treatments for primary headaches in 13 specialized juvenile Headache Centers: The first multicenter Italian study

2017

Abstract Aim The purpose of this retrospective multicenter study was to evaluate the use and the self-perceived efficacy and tolerability of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments in children and adolescents with primary headaches. Methods Study of a cohort of children and adolescents diagnosed with primary headache, consecutively referred to 13 juvenile Italian Headache Centers. An ad hoc questionnaire was used for clinical data collection. Results Among 706 patients with primary headaches included in the study, 637 cases with a single type of headache (migraine 76% – with and without aura in 10% and 67% respectively; tension-type headache 24%) were selected (mean age at clinic…

Differentiation of calcium antagonists with respect to their effects in normal and skinned taenia caeci preparations

1987

Abstract In taenia preparations, depolarized by a K+-rich medium, Ca2+ caused contraction and cinnarizine (0.4–100 μM), trifluoperazine (2–100 μM) and verapamil (0.02–10 μM) caused concentration-dependent antagonism of Ca2+, displacing the Ca2+ log concentration-effect curve to the right and depressing the maximal response. Equieffective (IC75) antispasmogenic concentrations were selected. The antispasmogenic effects of verapamil were readily offset by removing the drug from the bathing fluid but those of the other drugs were not. The calcium antagonists (antispasmogenic IC75) were then tested for spasmolytic activity in tissues generating tension in response to the EC80 of Ca2+. Verapamil …

Effects of Ca2+ channel antagonists in guinea-pig normal and skinned gall bladder.

1993

CaCl2 (0.01-50 mM, in K(+)-depolarized tissues), KCl (0.1-100 mM) and acetylcholine (1 nM-10 mM) produced concentration-dependent contractions of guinea-pig isolated gall bladder. Nifedipine (1-100 microM), verapamil (1-100 microM), diltiazem (1-100 microM), cinnarizine (1-100 microM), and flunarizine (1-100 microM) each produced a concentration-related inhibition of the log concentration-effect curve for CaCl2. The rank order of potencies of these antagonists, measured as the IC50 against Ca2+ (50 mM)-induced contraction of depolarized gall bladder, was diltiazem (0.25 microM)or = verapamil (0.8 microM) approximately nifedipine (1.2 microM)cinnarizine (25 microM) approximately flunarizine …

A stochastic shape and orientation model for fibres with an application to carbon nanotubes

2012

Methods are introduced for analysing the shape and orientation of planar fibres from greyscale images of fibrous systems. The sequence of image processing techniques needed for segmentation of fibres is described. The identified fibres were interpreted as deformed line segments for which two shape and two orientation parameters are estimated by the maximum likelihood method. The methods introduced are shown to perform quite well for simulated systems of deformed line segments with known properties. They were applied to TEM images of carbon nanotubes embedded in polycarbonate.

Specific suppression of pentylenetetrazol-induced epileptiform discharges in CA3 neurons (hippocampal slice, guinea pig) by the organic calcium antag…

1989

Antiepileptic actions of the organic calcium antagonists flunarizine (cinnarizine derivate) and verapamil (papaverin derivat) on pentylenetetrazol-induced epileptic bioelectric activity were tested in CA3 neurones of hippocampal slices. In all experiments both calcium antagonists reduced the amplitudes and/or durations of paroxysmal depolarizations as well as their rate of occurrence, when the bath concentrations of flunarizine or verapamil exceeded 20 mumol/l. When they were added to the bath solution before pentylenetetrazol application, recordings of the resting membrane potential, of the membrane resistance, of action potentials and of spontaneous as well as of evoked excitatory and inh…

Benzo-Fused Periacenes or Double Helicenes? Different Cyclodehydrogenation Pathways on Surface and in Solution

2019

Controlling the regioselectivity of C-H activation in unimolecular reactions is of great significance for the rational synthesis of functional graphene nanostructures, which are called nanographenes. Here, we demonstrate that the adsorption of tetranaphthyl- p-terphenyl precursors on metal surfaces can completely change the cyclodehydrogenation route and lead to obtaining planar benzo-fused perihexacenes rather than double [7]helicenes during solution synthesis. The course of the on-surface planarization reactions is monitored using scanning probe microscopy, which unambiguously reveals the formation of dibenzoperihexacenes and the structures of reaction intermediates. The regioselective pl…

The binarization of consensus partition matrices (Bi-CoPaM) method has, among its unique features, the ability to perform ensemble clustering over the same set of genes from multiple microarray datasets by using various clustering methods in order to generate tunable tight clusters. Therefore, we have used the Bi-CoPaM method to the most synchronized 500 cell-cycle-regulated yeast genes from different microarray datasets to produce four tight, specific …

Breaking Bonds and Forming Nanographene Diradicals with Pressure.

2017

New anthanthrone-based polycyclic scaffolds possessing peripheral crowed quinodimethanes have been prepared. While the compounds adopt a closed-shell butterfly shaped structure in the ground state, a concave-to-convex fluxional dynamic inversion is accessible with a low energy barrier through an open-shell diradicaloid transition-state. Mainly driven by the release of strainattributed to the steric hindrance at the peri position of the anthanthrone core, a low-lying open-shell diradical is accessible through planarization of the core, which can be achieved by thermal excitation in solution. Alternatively, planarization can be achieved by application of mild pressure in the solid state, in w…

TREATMENT OF TINNITUS AND DIZZINESS ASSOCIATED VERTEBROBASILAR INSUFFICIENCY WITH A FIXED COMBINATION OF CINNARIZINE AND DIMENHYDRINATE

2012

Seventy-eight consecutive subjects, 43 males and 35 females, ranging from 43 to 87 years of age suffering from dizziness and/or tinnitus due to vertebrobasilar insufficiency without other central nervous system diseases were treated with fixed combination of cinnarizine and dimenhydrinate two times a day and for two months. Data were collected considering the following parameters: age, sex, vestibular symptoms (unsteadiness, staggering, tendency to fall, swaying, vertigo due to change of position, bowing, walking, eye movements), headache, tinnitus, impaired hearing and aural fullness. Patients evaluated their vertigo symptoms and/or tinnitus intensities using a graded 3- point visual analo…
