Successful turnarounds in bankrupt firms? Assessing retrenchment in the most severe form of crisis

During economic downturns, firms file for bankruptcy in an effort to attempt a “turnaround.” The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of retrenchment strategies in the context of bankruptcy, as the most severe form of crisis. We conducted a longitudinal analysis of a sample of 868 bankrupt Spanish firms during the period 2004–2017. The empirical results show that stakeholder support and deep cost retrenchment increase the likelihood of survival and performance recovery, while aggressive layoffs are detrimental for turning bankrupt firms around. On July 13th 1920, in Trieste, the fascists destroyed a building known as «Balkan», an outpost of the Slovenian community. This essay studies the symbolic legacy of that assault, as it was one of the first fascist squads actions in Italy. The memory of the «Balkan» is analysed through its connections with important squads leaders’ careers, the effects of Trieste’s urban expansion and the fascist cult of the fallen «squadristi». The timeline of this study stretches until the Second World War, when the fascists attack on the Slovenian and Croatian population hit a new peak.

Corporate crisis management in Italy: execution, monitoring and performance analysis of recovery business and financial plans

This paper presents a thourugh investigation of how corporate crises are managed in the Italian context. It offers an investigation of the legal, accounting, finance and managerial aspects that are involved in the formal resolution of the crisis. The paper adopts a qualitative methodology consisting in a critical review of both the academic and the practical literature to present a systematic overview of how recovery plans are executed, monitored and their performance analyzed. The paper presents important insights for researchers, practitioners, enterpreneurs and managers interested in crisis management.

Checca’s canzona ‘Benedetto, maledetto’, the shortest number in "Il Flaminio" (1735) by Gennaro Antonio Federico and Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, has often been considered to be a direct quotation or a convincing inimitation of a popular song. In fact, its poetic text derives from the comedy "La Tancia" (1611) by Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger. In both works the scene shows a therapeutic strategy adopted to stop a (presumed) epileptic seizure. Podstawę źródłową szkicu biograficznego Chodkiewicza stanowią materiały przechowywane w Archiwum Narodowym w Krakowie, w zespole Archiwum Młynowskie Chodkiewiczów.
