Conspiracy theories in Republican Italy: the Pellegrino Report to the Parliamentary Commission on Terrorism

This article analyses the draft of the final report prepared by Senator Giovanni Pellegrino, who from 1994 to 2001 chaired the ‘Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry on terrorism in Italy and on the causes of the failure to identify those responsible for the massacres’. The document was completed in 1995 and attempted a general interpretation of the causes of the political violence that had been a major feature of the history of the Italian Republic up to that point. Between improvisation and inevitability: former Latvian officials’ memoirs of the Soviet era

ABSTRACTThis article deals with the autobiographies of former Soviet officials that have been published in Latvia since the 1990s. In particular, it focuses on three interrelated layers of biographical narrative: construction of social identity, strategies for avoiding the stigmatization of collaboration, and comparisons between the Soviet and post-Soviet experience. The article contends that former officials in their memoirs use a pragmatic representation of the Soviet past as the major locus of their positive identity. Through this genuine representation of the past, autobiographers emphasize virtues that might be accepted by a post-Soviet neoliberal society.

Abstract This paper investigates, with the help of motion capture data processed on corpus principles, the characteristics of head and upper-torso movements in constructed action and regular narration (i.e., signing without constructed action) in FinSL. Specifically, the paper evaluates the validity of two arguments concerning constructed action: that constructed action forms a continuum with regular narration, and that constructed action divides into three subtypes (i.e., overt, reduced, and subtle). A partir del estudio de caso de la exhumación, reinhumación y demarcación territorial como lugar de memoria de dos fosas de mujeres represaliadas en la retaguardia sublevada y franquista en Candeleda (Ávila) y Grazalema (Cádiz), el presente artículo da cuenta de los procesos y tensiones que transitan las fosas comunes como lugares de memoria. Se ponen en cuestión aquí diferentes formas de interpretar la ritualización de los momentos significativos de recuperación de los cuerpos de los ejecutados/as por el franquismo, y de las tensiones en torno a lugares de memoria dominantes y la fosa común después de la exhumación. Parte de la base teórica que considera la autoficción como un género no subordinado a otros, siguiendo la posición de Vera Toro, y elabora un estudio de las claves poéticas de la obra, así como de las condiciones sociohistóricas en que ha sido escrita. El presente ensayo organiza los principales presupuestos poéticos del género testimonial en clave de lectura de las nuevas configuraciones metafóricas que organizan las memorias en conflicto: las batallas y sus vestuarios, los poetas y los traperos. El trabajo historiza los primeros desarrollos conceptuales del género y sus protocolos de veracidad anclados en el familismo de los primeros relatos testimoniales muy próximos al discurso jurídico. Jesmyn Ward’s second novel, Salvage the Bones (2011), offers a literary account of an African American family in dire poverty struggling to weather the horrors of Hurricane Katrina on the outskirts of Bois Sauvage, Mississippi. This article focuses on the novel’s ‘ideology of form’, which is premised on biblical models of narration —grounded on a literary transposition of The Book of Deuteronomy— that serves to portray the victimization of African Americans in mythical tones to evoke the country’s failed covenant between God and his chosen people.
