Frame building and frame sponsorship in the 2011 Spanish election: the practices of polarised pluralism

2017

ABSTRACTThis study assesses if the well-established polarised pluralism of the Spanish news media system translated into frame sponsorship during the 2011 Spanish General Election. After reviewing the historical and cultural influences that shaped the 2011 Spanish electoral campaign, I conduct a qualitative discourse analysis of 96 news releases issued by the 2 main Spanish political parties, the Socialist Party and the People’s Party, to identify their sponsored diagnostic and prognostic frames. I then compare the partisan news releases with 27 El Pais and El Mundo editorials that evaluated the party-sponsored frames to explore if and to what extent both Spanish leading newspapers adopted …

Educational discourse in Spain during the early Franco regime (1936–1943): toward a genealogy of doctrine and concepts

2015

In this article an analysis is undertaken of Spanish educational discourse during the early years of the Franco regime, from the Civil War (1936–1939) to the establishment of the Nuevo Estado or New State (1939–1943), employing Reinhart Koselleck’s principles of conceptual history. Without totally spurning the totalitarian and fascist ideology of the new regime, this educational discourse constructed an imagined community of Espana Nacional (Nationalist Spain) by means of a historical narrative that began with the uprising led by General Franco in July 1936. The discourse sought to recover the importance of the nation’s traditions so as to promote a conceptual and symbolic imaginary that mi…

Spatial history: railways, uneven development and population change in France and Great Britain, 1850-1914

2011

International audience; A comparative spatial history combining historical narrative, geographical thinking, and spatial analysis of historical data offers new perspectives on railway expansion and its effects in France and Great Britain during the long nineteenth century. Accessible rail transport in the rural regions of both countries opened new economic opportunities in agriculture, extractive industries, and service trades, helping to revitalize rural communities and decrease their rates of out-migration. In France, long-standing economic disparities between the developed north and the less-productive south gradually reduced. These conclusions are based, in part, on the use of historica…

”Juhannuksena sää saattaa olla lämmin”

2020

Weather is the medium through which we connect with climate in our everyday activities. It creates our understanding of the climate and its meanings in particular places. Hence, there is a rising interest in studying the everyday weather experiences as a means to understand the ways climate and climate change affect our daily lives, and to explain different perceptions on climate change and conflicts over climate policies. Building on studies related to cultural understanding of climate change, this paper examines the contexts and ways weather is narrated in newspaper media in Finland. The analysis is based on weather related news reports on the year of strange weather, 2018, published in t…

Accounting, gender and history: the life of Minna Canth

2009

This article introduces Minna Canth, one of the earliest businesswomen in Finland, although better known as a pioneer of Finnish realistic literature and champion of the women's movement. The historical study method is applied together with a narrative and interpretative approach to examine accounting and gender based on Minna Canth's bookkeeping and correspondence in the 1880s. Minna Canth's story brings together three realities that normally do not meet: women's everyday life, business, and literature. The study introduces an early female merchant who was knowledgeable about financial issues and managed her own business affairs independently. An intended contribution of this study to acc…

A Unique Case and Opportunity: In Favor of a Study on the UTC Label

2004

I want to concentrate on three broad themes in responding to the papers by Arlt and Collins. The first one is about archives and collecting and what I call the dilemmas of discography. Connected to these dilemmas is the question of the place of popular music within academia and the implications thereof for the distribution of funds. The second one is more concerned with concepts and ideas. And the third one relates to the position of Christianity in the African cultures and history we study and with its position in our academic field. Starting with the first theme, I want to direct our attention to the UTC record collection. For the study of popular African music the UTC series of over 700 …

Singing the News of Punishment

2021

Abstract This article explores the pan-European phenomenon of the execution ballad, songs that told the news of true crimes and their punishment by public execution. Looking at examples across nine languages, from the sixteenth through the nineteenth century, this comparison reveals that these ballads share multiple features in textual content and format: a recognisable, formulaic narrative; sensationalist and emotive language; and a conservative perspective that confirms that the condemned is guilty and that ‘justice’ is being served. We also note key regional differences, such as in the use (or not) of contrafactum, the setting of new lyrics to familiar melodies, in the use of the first v…
