"La ocasión": una novela en el eje de la vacilación

2014

This paper aims to analyze Juan Jose Saer’s narrative strategy in the novel "La ocasion". The author takes over some of the characters belonging to Argentinian collective imagination –who are national mythts–, what allows him to show the pampas as a misty and insurmountable mythical place. The especial mapping of plain he draws is not only a geographic framework in which the landowner, the gaucho or immigrant face both the environment and the otherness. This may be understood as a metaphor of man’s general condition. From a Lacanian orientation, the second part of this article examines the configuration of the main character from its central theme: spirit-matter dichotomy.

“Sport has always been first for me” but “all my free time is spent doing homework”: Dual career styles in late adolescence

2017

Abstract Objectives In adolescence, personally meaningful autobiographical memories begin to integrate into cultural narrative structures to form a life story. We examined how and to what extent adolescent Finnish athletes narrate and integrate significant life events in sport and education into their identities and future narratives in order to delineate the different styles of athletes’ career construction. Design Longitudinal qualitative study. Method Ten female and eight male, elite junior athletes, aged 15–16 at baseline, participated in individual conversational interviews. The resulting interview data were analyzed using narrative analysis. Results Thirteen of 18 adolescent athletes …

Speaking from above and below -The Gospel of John as metaphorical and narrative reference to a distant reality

2018

The one who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks from the earth (Jn 3:31). How can one speak from the earth and at the same time about heavenly things? The Fourth Gospel (FG) creates a tension between these two realms of perception and cognition. To reach beyond or above the earth we have to transcend time and space, our individual context and limited visual horizon. To overcome the obstacle of confined space we can rely on metaphors since their key faculty is to transport (μετα-φέρω). To transcend the limitations of time we can recruit the genre of narration. These two modes of references to a reality that is located and dated beyond our realms are at work in the FG. With Rico…

Новый ЛЕФ и киновещь

2019

Abstract In the 1920s, the LEF project moved the discussion about the role of “things in film” – as metonymic and metaphoric, photogenic and functional, and as tools that filled gaps in the narrative, stood in for actors, or operated as generic markers – in a distinctly materialist direction. Sergei Eisenstein and Dziga Vertov were sharply criticized for turning things into symbols in their films. To avoid this aesthetic dispute, Tret’iakov advocated production scripts based on the dominance of material things over plot. Eisenstein, in his unfinished text ‘Play of Objects' (‘Ob igre predmetov’), offers another understanding of things in film. A film-thing (kinoveshch’), in his reading, is f…

Human Monkeypox: A Comprehensive Narrative Review and Analysis of the Public Health Implications.

2022

Recently, numerous cases of monkeypox were reported from several non-endemic countries in Europe, North America, and Oceania, suggesting an unusual and alarming public health issue, particularly considering that the disease is not directly related to human or animal travels. Attention is currently being drawn to this phenomenon since more than 70% of the global population is no longer vaccinated against smallpox. Indeed, the smallpox vaccination also confers some indirect degree of protection against other poxviruses, including monkeypox. We performed a narrative review to describe the existing literature with regard to monkeypox using the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Scopus databases. This review …

Current Thoughts on the Neolithisation Process of the Western Mediterranean

2017

The analysis of the Neolithisation process constitutes a recurrent theme in the scientific literature given the fundamental change for human populations implied in the transition from a hunting-fishing-gathering economy to one based on domestication and food production. Nonetheless, the majority of the regional syntheses on a European scale published to date have dealt mainly with the historical narrative of the process, focusing on discussing the Neolithisation process from a demographic and/or cultural perspective. In this respect, the work of Ammerman and Cavalli Sforza (1984) without doubt constituted a turning point in a number of aspects relevant to the study of the Neolithisation of …

The migrant crisis in the Mediterranean Sea: Empirical evidence on policy interventions

2021

Abstract This paper presents a novel set of empirical evidence to explore several hypotheses regarding the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean Sea. The political instability in transit countries, such as Libya, that made pre-existent repatriation policies ineffective, called for several search-and-rescue operations in the Mediterranean, which in turn have been wrongly accused of fostering illegal immigration and increasing deaths at sea. The empirical results show that the main determinants of the departures are several root causes at the departing African countries, underlining the importance of fighting human smuggling networks. The paper suggests a change in migration studies’ perspectiv…

Museums as Disseminators of Niche Knowledge

2019

Accessibility has been facing several challenges within Audiovisual Translation Studies and has also gained great opportunities for its establishment as a methodologically and theoretically well-founded discipline. Audiovisual translation modes have achieved a crucial role in the transmission of what scholarly studies have discussed in relation to media accessibility as a set of services and practices providing access to audiovisual media content for persons with sensory impairment. Today accessibility has become a concept involving more and more universality, since it is extensively contributing to the dissemination of audiovisual and visual products about issues on minorities, and also ad…

Aging men, masculinities and modern medicine: An introduction

2013

This new focus on men as a research category has coincided with rapidly increasing aging populations in Western nations, with attendant concerns about the consequences for already-strained health and social service systems. World Health Day in 20 12, for example, focused on the theme of aging and health, aiming no less than for a 'need to reinvent aging' (WHO 2012) . Since the late 1990s, the 'aging male' in particular has become the focus of an expanding constellation of professional and health promotion concerns. As the mission statement of the International Society for the Study of the Aging Male put it, 'healthy aging and survival of men will have an impact on both family and society. T…
