Talis pater, talis filius: the role of discursive strategies, thematic narratives and ideology in Cosa Nostra

2018

The discursive analysis of criminal organizations’ family dynamics and ideological devices may provide important insights into the inner functioning of these groups. In this article, we describe and analyze a specific set of discursive strategies and the thematic narratives emerging from a TV interview with Giuseppe Riina, a member of Cosa Nostra and the son of one of the most important mafia bosses. Our analyses demonstrate the existence of recurring ideological devices such as reductionism, amoralism, familism, verticalism, normalism, victimism and religious relativism. The results are discussed in light of previous research that examines how discursive strategies and narratives may repre…

Opposite Ends: widows' narratives of contemporary late life

2020

The life course perspective frames this study of contemporary late life. Thematic narrative analysis is employed to analyse the stories of 16 Finnish widows aged 79–89 years (Moving in Old Age: Transitions in Housing and Care research project) in order to explore the experiences related to growing old. The results indicate two kinds of narratives: nostalgic reminiscences about a happy past are typical of the retiring to solitude story, characterised by experiences of life nearing its end and of letting go; and those inclined towards the keeping up narrative are still seeking new experiences and playing active roles in everyday life. Both kinds of stories encompass well-being, in spite of…

Deconstructing Machos, Constructing People. Narratives of Alienation from Hegemonic Masculinity in Spain

2022

Philosophy in Digital Culture: Images and the Aestheticization of the Public Intellectual’s Narratives

2020

The present paper deals with the problem of the digital-culture-public-philosophy as a possible response of those philosophers who see the need to face the challenges of the Internet and the visual culture that constitutes an important part of the Internet cultural space. It claims that this type of philosophy would have to, among many other things, modify and broaden philosophers’ traditional mode of communication. It would have to expand its textual, or mainly text-related, communication mode into the aesthetic and visual communication mode. More precisely, philosophers would have to learn how to aestheticize and visualize their ethical (epistemic, ontological, social) narratives by using…

Family-student balance: a qualitative study about limitations of university mothers

2016

The balance between family and student life, viewed as the possibility of being a mother and university student at the same time, is still not seen as something usual in higher education. This leads to discrimination against student mothers compared with other students. In this study, using a qualitative, narrative-based methodology based on semi-structured interviews, we analysed the beliefs and attitudes of a total of 73 university students. They reflect on aspects of the academic career that restrict the student-family balance. The students’ opinions revealed the limitations on the possibilities of having children, included some proposals for improvements to the legislation, and their at…

Tri-Marium as the ‘emancipation’ of East-Central Europe: framing European counter-narratives in Poland

2021

The historical notion of Inter-Marium captured Poland’s centuriesold concept of integrating, in a form of confederation, the new states that appeared on the map between the Baltic and Black Seas after 1918. Reincarnated as the contemporary narrative of Tri-Marium, this notion is gaining new momentum and has been most visible in Poland, the largest state of the European Union’s Eastern semi-periphery. This article examines Inter-Marium as one of the most clearly articulated counter-narratives to the mainstream European integration project. Drawing on original research rooted primarily in critical discourse analysis, the article uses framing as an interpretative tool. It analyses the narrativ…

Historical competencies and narratives: the historical thinking of students and pre-service teachers

2015

Depression : The differing Narratives of Couples in Couple Therapy

2014

Introduction When a person becomes depressed, partnership can either be a source of strength, advancing recovery, or a source of further suffering, harming the health of both partners (Cordova & Gee, 2001). Also, depression in one spouse can create feelings of helplessness and hopelessness in both spouses (Cordova & Gee). These are some of the reasons why couple therapy has been used with persons diagnosed with depression and their spouses. Yet, according to Denton and Burwell's (2006) experience, which is similar to our own, the spouses of depressed patients often are not part of the treatment in psychiatric outpatient care, and hence feel unsupported, uninformed, isolated, confused, and f…

2020

[EN] This work focuses on the visual narratives generated from images captured by art education students, as a result of projects developed in the Teaching classrooms during different academic years. In them intervenes, at first, the gaze of the students as visual producers through portable devices, mainly mobile phones, in educational environments between 2011 and 2017. The images were captured at different chronological moments and materialized on the university campuses of Ontinyent and Dels Tarongers, from the Faculty of Education. The work theoretically approximates the method of Research Based on the Arts. The images produced by the students are composed by the author and researcher t…
