Internationalization patterns in fashion retail distribution: implications for firm results

2011

Fashion retailers have been intensively involved in internationalization processes, leading to an upsurge of some global fashion brands. Notwithstanding, internationalization processes may differ across retailers and also their results in their overseas ventures. This paper aims at shedding additional light on fashion retail internationalization, proposing two objectives: first, it aims at identifying several internationalization patterns in fashion retailing. Second, after identifying several retailer profiles, we test for significant differences in their financial results. With chi-square automatic interaction detection analysis, we identify four groups of retailers whose internationaliza…

The Indian Scenario

2016

The architecture of the Indian higher-education system is not a simple one, with the legacy of the British Empire, the distinction between deemed and non-deemed universities, aided and non-aided colleges, rural and urban institutions. The youth of the Indian population arguably constitutes the most decisive asset in the knowledge economy. The mass-scale of Indian higher-education as well as the increasingly significant role of the private sector, are posing new challenges to regulatory bodies. The supply of graduates assumes great importance in twenty-first-century India. The enhancement and the modernization of the Indian higher-education system have been redefined as a national priority, …

An Integrated International Learning Model for Internationalizing I/O Psychology Programs

2013

Today’s companies that employ industrial/organizational (I/O) psychologists typically have international linkages, whether the company is itself multinational or the company has international partners, vendors, or consumers. These companies would benefit from having I/O psychology (IOP) professionals who are knowledgeable about IOP practices that transcend national boundaries or constrained by them. Therefore, it behooves IOP graduate programs to prepare their students to provide services that benefit an international workforce. In this chapter, we present the integrated international learning (IIL) model. This model forwards different ways of designing international IOP programs by combini…

Dynamic capabilities in the internationalization process of companies distributing products of the agribusiness sector

2016

The agri-food sector faces important internal and external barriers to internationalization that could be overcome by the development of dynamic capabilities. Generic dynamic capabilities generate sector and environment specific dynamic capabilities that directly contribute to overcome the barriers of internationalization. Our contribution is to determine which specific dynamic capabilities of the distribution companies collaborate to overcome these barriers and as a consequence to improve international results. A qualitative study with directors and managers of the sector was carried out. The results give rise to confirm that the specific dynamic capabilities largely help to resolve the in…

Internationalization via strategic alliances in family businesses.

2004

It has been observed in previous studies that certain characteristics of family businesses may impede internationalization. These characteristics include the concentration of decision-making in the hands of a single shareholder or small group of shareholders, delays in the succession process, aversion to internationalization, etc. Despite these obstacles, a large number of family businesses have chosen to internationalize as a means of revitalizing themselves. The results of the study reported here indicate three important pre-requisites for family businesses that are seriously considering internationalization as an aid to growth: they need to have a market-leading product, adequate financi…

The requisite match between internal resources and network ties to cope with knowledge scarcity

2020

PurposeThis paper aims to investigate the internationalization strategies of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), focusing on the interaction between network ties and “soft” internal resources at the foundation of knowledge management (KM). Specifically, it identifies the firms’ internal capabilities that affect KM strategies, and their collective influence on the degree of internationalization; verifies the influence of network ties on the internationalization process itself; and develops a conceptual “preliminary theoretical framework of SME internationalization capabilities and networks.”Design/methodology/approachThe primary research and analysis are based on a proportional stratified s…

Augmented Reality Applications in the Transition Towards the Sustainable Organization

2016

Business companies are increasingly aware that the world where they operate in is facing increasing environmental, economic and social challenges, thus there is a trend in most companies to align their processes and services with a sustainability agenda. Customers, shareholders, financial partners, governmental agencies, NGOs, globalization and internationalization of environmental and social standards exert new pressures on them to do so. Industry is widely recognized as being essential for wealth creation and development, although it is at times considered a source of environmental degradation and social concerns. Thus, industry must play an important role for the transition towards the s…

Organizational Learning, Innovation and Internationalization: A Complex System Model

2013

Research on organizational learning, innovation and internationalization has traditionally linked these concepts through linear causality, by considering any one of them as the cause of another, an approach that might be considered contradictory and static. This paper aims to clarify these relationships and proposes a dynamic theoretical model that has mutual causality at its core and is based on ideas originating in complexity theory. The final model results from case studies of two clothing sector firms. The authors consider that the three concepts constitute a complex system and can adapt and transcend, as any alteration can take the system to the edge of chaos. Adaptability is fostered …

Internal vs. external R&D teams: Evidences from the Italian wine industry

2021

R&D teams' internationalization attracts interests from different research-streams. However, the decision on what type of R&D structure is more convenient to invest in may differ, based on several factors, such as risk-taking propensity and internal resource availability. With an aim to enrich the extant literature and to provide practical insights for managers working in the wine industry, this case study explores the determinants of an Italian family-owned winery that attempts to keep a balance between its internal and external R&D teams' decision, using an integrated theoretical framework based on the transaction costs and the resource-based view theory. The optimal R&D s…
