Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (CSF) and multilineage CSF recruit human monocytes to express granulocyte CSF
1989
Abstract We assessed the capacity of recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and multilineage (Multi)-CSF to induce release of granulocyte-CSF (G-CSF) by highly purified peripheral blood monocyte (Mo) preparations. Our results reveal that GM-CSF and Multi-CSF, either alone or in a synergistic concert, activate Mo to transcribe G-CSF messenger (m) RNA and release biologically active G- CSF protein into their culture supernatants. G-CSF had no regulatory effect on Mo expression of cytoplasmic G-CSF mRNA levels and G-CSF protein secretion by itself. These differential actions of CSFs provide further insight into self-regulatory mechanisms within the growth f…
Extracellular matrix regulation of PTHrP and PTH/PTHrP receptor in a human breast cancer cell line
1999
AbstractIt was previously reported that 8701-BC breast cancer cells express the gene for parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP) and its cognate receptor (PTHrP-R), and release immunoreactive PTHrP in the extracellular medium; it was also found that PTHrP, in turn, exerts a role on the proliferative and invasive behavior in vitro of the same cell line. On the other hand, evidence has been produced that adhesion of 8701-BC cells onto different collagen substrates influences in various ways a number of phenotypic expressions, such as cell growth, motility, invasion of reconstituted basement membrane and production of lytic enzymes of the extracellular matrix (ECM). In light of these previ…
Between idealism and realism: the global governance of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament
2014
Why has it not yet been possible to bring the nuclear weapons regime to an end and why are prospects about a nuclear weapon free future so bleak? In this thesis, I analyze both the achievements and failures concerning the global governance of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. In the first chapter, I outline key terms and concepts as well as the historical backgrounds, which are essential for understanding the proliferation of nuclear weapons and the global governance of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. In the second chapter, I examine the efforts on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament of four global key actors within the United Nations family: the General Assembly, …
Nationalism and Internationalism Reconciled : British Concepts for a New World Order during and after the World Wars
2018
The carnage of World War I gave rise to liberal visions for a new world order with democratized foreign policy and informed international public opinion. Conservatives emphasized continuity in national sovereignty, while socialists focused on the interests of the working class. While British diplomacy in the construction of the League of Nations has been widely discussed, we focus on contemporary uses of nationalism and internationalism in parliamentary and press debates that are more ideological. We also examine how failed internationalist visions influenced uses of these concepts during World War II, supporting alternative organizational solutions, caution with the rhetoric of democracy a…

Notes on Selected Genera of Shore Flies (Diptera: Ephydridae), with Removals to Drosophilidae, Heleomyzidae and Milichiidae
2022
The following new taxonomic changes in nine tribes of Ephydridae are proposed: status at species level: Ditrichophora amoena (Duda, 1942); 2 resurrections from synonymy: Ptilomyia madeirensis Stuke, 2012, bona species, and P. orsovana (Enderlein, 1922), bona species; 10 new combinations: Allotrichoma communis (Malloch, 1934), comb. nov., Athyroglossa bettelai (Canzoneri, 1995), comb. nov., Ceropsilopa africana (Canzoneri & Meneghini, 1969), comb. nov., Ceropsilopa flavescens (Frey, 1958), comb. nov., Diclasiopa affinis (Tonnoir & Malloch, 1926), comb. nov., Diclasiopa flavitarsis (Tonnoir & Malloch, 1926), comb. nov., Diclasiopa senegalensis (Canzoneri, 1981), comb. nov., Ditrichophora amoe…
A revision of the Old World species of Leptopsilopa Cresson (Insecta: Diptera: Ephydridae)
2016
Diagnoses and illustrations of three Leptopsilopa species known in the Old World: L. africana Cresson, L. mutabilis Cresson and L. pollinosa (Kertesz) are provided. Three new synonyms are proposed: L. aurata (Canzoneri and Meneghini) and L. tibialis (Canzoneri and Meneghini) = L. africana; Psilopa confeteae Canzoneri and Munari = L. pollinosa. Three other species are removed from Leptopsilopa and combined with Athyroglossa, as A. leonensis (Canzoneri and Rampini), new combination, A. mianii (Canzoneri) new combination and A. rossii (Canzoneri and Raffone), new combination.

Liberal Institutionalism
2020
The application of liberal institutionalism to peacekeeping has shed light on several important questions regarding why member states support the deployment of a specific operation, how they build support for their position, whether domestic preferences influence their strategies in the Security Council and why they volunteer troops for peacekeeping. Sponsorship records have proven to be a useful sourse for researching coalition-building on peacekeeping.
