Physico-chemical characterization of the Acqualadrone rostrum

2011

The archaeological discovery of the Acqualadrone rostrum (an offensive naval weapon mounted on the prow at the waterline), off the Italian coast near Messina in 2008, has led to the need for scientific research in order to plan the conservation treatment of this artefact. The discovery is exceptional because of the presence of a wooden section from the original ship. This paper describes the physico-chemical characterization of a metallic and two wooden samples by inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 13C {1H} crosspolarization magic angle spinning NMR spectroscopy, energy-dispersi…

Ligand-induced phosphorylation/dephosphorylation of the endogenous bradykinin B2 receptor from human fibroblasts.

1996

We have studied the ligand-induced phosphorylation/dephosphorylation of the bradykinin B2 receptor endogenously expressed in human HF-15 fibroblasts. An antiserum (AS346) to a synthetic peptide (CRS36), derived from the extreme carboxyl terminus of the human B2 receptor, precipitated the receptor from solubilized membranes of HF-15 cells that had been labeled with [32P]orthophosphate. A low basal level of B2 receptor phosphorylation was found in the absence of a ligand. Stimulation of the cells with the B2 receptor agonists bradykinin, [Lys0,Hyp3]bradykinin, kallidin, and T-kinin resulted in a rapid and efficient phosphorylation of the receptor. The B2 receptor antagonist HOE140 and the B1 …

Molecular structure of the cell wall receptor for killer toxin KT28 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

1988

The adsorption of the yeast killer toxin KT28 to susceptible cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was prevented by concanavalin A, which blocks the mannoprotein receptor. Certain mannoprotein mutants of S. cerevisiae that lack definite structures in the mannan of their cell walls were found to be resistant to KT28, whereas the wild-type yeast from which the mutants were derived was susceptible. Isolated mannoprotein from a resistant mutant was unable to adsorb killer toxin. By comparing the resistances of different mannoprotein mutants, information about the molecular structure of the receptor was obtained. At least two mannose residues have to be present in the side chains of the outer chain …

Interactive roll stabilization comparative analysis for large yacht: gyroscope versus active fins

2020

The problem of the active stabilization of ship motions is particularly important in the case of pleasure boats or in any case of passenger ships, since the commercial value of the ship is directly related to the comfort of the load transported in this case “people”, considered as stresses induced on them by the vessel movements, with particular attention to roll, given the ship geometric characteristics. Naval architects developed trough the years different solutions to reduce the roll of the ship, and consequentially to increase the passengers comfort, and the development of this solutions followed the progress of technology. Active fins have been the most used, but now the gyroscope solu…

Carbohydrate-Mediated Biomolecular Recognition and Gating of Synthetic Ion Channels

2013

Nanochannel-based biosensing devices have been proposed for selective detection of protein analyte molecules. However, the design and miniaturization of reusable channel-based biosensors is still a challenge in nanoscience and biotechnology. We present here a reusable nanofluidic biosensor based on reversible lectin-carbohydrate interactions. The nanochannels are fabricated in heavy ion tracked polymer membranes. The channel walls are functionalized with p-aminophenyl alpha-D-mannopyranoside (APMP) monolayers through carbodiimide coupling chemistry. The chemical (mannopyranoside) groups on the inner channel walls serve as binding sites and interact with specific protein molecules. The bindi…

Experimental evaluation of through-the-thickness stress distribution in transverse crack tension test samples

2015

Transverse Crack Tension (TCT) samples represent an alternative to End Notched Flexure configurations for the characterization of pure mode II fracture toughness of Fibre Reinforced Polymer composites. TCT is supposed to reproduce a pure Mode II failure mechanism while avoiding the frictional energy dissipation between the flanks of a starter crack. The TCT geometry is that of a unidirectional tensile sample where a number of embedded plies, centered on the middle plane, are cut in the transverse fibres direction. The tensile loading should then activate four symmetric fronts of mode II delamination from the transverse cut tips. The present work describes the implementation of two full fiel…

La Sicilia nel Mediterraneo di Cervantes da Lepanto a Capo Corvo (1571-1613)

2018

The essay outlines the military- strategic role played by the Kingdom of Sicily in the Mediterranean between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and focuses on the major issues – already debated by contemporaries – regarding the relationship between land defense and sea …

The Effects of Individual Characteristics of the Naval Personnel on Sleepiness and Stress during Two Different Watchkeeping Schedules

2022

Background: Naval service can have a significant impact on the wellbeing of seafarers, and the operation of warships is highly dependent on the personnel on board. Nevertheless, there is a lack of knowledge concerning the impact of seafarers’ individual characteristics on their wellbeing in a naval environment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate individual characteristics of the naval personnel that may be associated with the amount of sleepiness, fatigue and stress responses experienced during shift work and irregular working hours in a naval environment. Methods: The study took place on a Finnish Defence Forces’ Navy missile patrol boat on which 18 crewmembers served as s…
