Post memory and cinematic affect in The Midwife
2017
The Second World War has proved a rich source of inspiration for fiction films worldwide. The Finnish fiction film The Midwife (Kätilö, Antti J. Jokinen, 2015) is aimed at an international audience with a story that takes place in the context of the Lapland War in Finland in 1944. The film tells of a romantic relationship between a local woman and a member of the German army, in a highly affective manner. This article argues that the film downplays elements that might have interested the national, or local, audience, and that it privileges affect over knowledge. To bring out the film’s transnational character, the article begins by analysing it in the context of national, or local, and glob…
El arquitecto Rafael Guastavino (1842-1908): obra en cuatro actos
2018
[EN] This text presents extensive new information on the figure of architect Rafael Guastavino Moreno (1842-1908), those around him, and his personal and family relationships with architecture. It also examines other artistic fields and trades such as music, carpentry and winemaking, all of which influenced and obtained feedback for Guastavino¿s architecture within the historical, political and economic situation of the three places where he lived in Spain: Valencia, Barcelona and Almudévar (Huesca), before emigrating to the United States of America, where his successful professional career as an architect is widely recognized in the literature
Roflumilast inhibits respiratory syncytial virus infection in human differentiated bronchial epithelial cells.
2013
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes acute exacerbations in COPD and asthma. RSV infects bronchial epithelial cells (HBE) that trigger RSV associated lung pathology. This study explores whether the phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) inhibitor Roflumilast N-oxide (RNO), alters RSV infection of well-differentiated HBE (WD-HBE) in vitro. WD-HBE were RSV infected in the presence or absence of RNO (0.1-100 nM). Viral infection (staining of F and G proteins, nucleoprotein RNA level), mRNA of ICAM-1, ciliated cell markers (digital high speed videomicroscopy, β-tubulin immunofluorescence, Foxj1 and Dnai2 mRNA), Goblet cells (PAS), mRNA of MUC5AC and CLCA1, mRNA and protein level of IL-13, IL-6, IL-8, T…
Nemastoma bidentatum (Arachnida: Opiliones: Nemastomatidae): neu für Deutschland und die Tschechische Republik
2007
Nemastoma bidentatum (Arachnida: Opiliones: Nemastomatidae): first records for Germany and the Czech Republic. N. bidentatum Roewer, 1914 was found at two places in Germany: first on the island "Harriersand" in the Weser river (Lower Saxony), second on the banks of the river Elbe in the Elbsandsteingebirge (Saxony). Adjacent to the latter locality an occurrence in the Czech Republic could be located close to the German/Czech border in the floodplain of the river Elbe as well. These records are the first for Germany and the Czech Republic. They enlarge the distribution area of N. bidentatum remarkably in both a northern and a western direction. The two populations show conspicuous difference…
Kaitējuma atlīdzināšanas problemātika sauszemes transportlīdzekļu īpašnieku civiltiesiskās atbildības obligātajā apdrošināšanā
2015
Pētījuma mērķis ir parādīt šī brīža aktuālākās problēmas kaitējumu atlīdzināšanā sauszemes transportlīdzekļu tiesīgo lietotāju obligātajā civiltiesiskajā apdrošināšanā. Darbā tiek konstatētas problēmas spēkā esošo tiesību normu pielietojumā reālās situācijās, konstatējot transportlīdzekļu tiesīgo lietotāju atbildības pakāpi un atlīdzinot radīto kaitējumu trešajām personām. Tāpat tiek analizētas Latvijas tiesību normu savstarpējās pretrunas, kā arī to atbilstība Eiropas Savienības tiesību normām un Eiropas Savienības Tiesu nolēmumiem. Ņemot vērā Eiropas Savienības tiesību avotu ietekmi uz Latvijas tiesību normām, mēģināts sniegt iespējamos risinājumus, kas izpaužas gan interpretācijā, gan iz…
Treponema isoptericolens sp. nov., a novel spirochaete from the hindgut of the termite Incisitermes tabogae.
2008
A novel spirochaete, Treponema sp. strain SPIT5T, was isolated from hindgut contents of the drywood termite Incisitermes tabogae (Snyder). The cells of strain SPIT5T were motile, helical in shape, 0.4-0.5 microm in diameter and generally 12-20 microm long. The strain is obligately anaerobic and ferments different mono-, di- and oligosaccharides by forming ethanol as the main liquid fermentation end product. Furthermore, strain SPIT5T was able to grow anaerobically with yeast extract as sole carbon and energy source. Fastest growth was obtained at 30 degrees C, the temperature at which the termites were also grown. The optimum pH for growth was 7.2, with a range of pH 6.5-8.0. The cells poss…
PCR testing for Treponema pallidum in paraffin-embedded skin biopsy specimens: test design and impact on the diagnosis of syphilis
2007
Background: Syphilis, a chronic infection caused by Treponema pallidum (T. pallidum), is a disease which is increasing in incidence, and thus more and more becoming a differential diagnosis in routine pathology. Aim: Since histological changes are not specific, we sought to develop a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based molecular assay for the detection of T. pallidum in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues, and evaluate its diagnostic power, especially in comparison with other ancillary methods, i.e. immunohistochemistry and Dieterle staining. Methods: 36 skin biopsies with the clinical and /or serological diagnosis of syphilis were evaluated by morphology, immunohistochemistry and s…
Yeast Population Dynamics during the Fermentation and Biological Aging of Sherry Wines
2001
ABSTRACTMolecular and physiological analyses were used to study the evolution of the yeast population, from alcoholic fermentation to biological aging in the process of “fino” sherry wine making. The four races of “flor”Saccharomyces cerevisiae (beticus, cheresiensis, montuliensis, androuxii) exhibited identical restriction patterns for the region spanning the internal transcribed spacers 1 and 2 (ITS-1 and ITS-2) and the 5.8S rRNA gene, but this pattern was different, from those exhibited by non-florS. cerevisiaestrains. This flor-specific pattern was detected only after wines were fortified, never during alcoholic fermentation, and all the strains isolated from the velum exhibited the typ…
Which lactic acid bacteria are responsible for histamine production in wine?
2005
Aims: To quantify the ability of 136 lactic acid bacteria (LAB), isolated from wine, to produce histamine and to identify the bacteria responsible for histamine production in wine. Methods and Results: A qualitative method based on pH changes in a plate assay was used to detect wine strains capable of producing high levels of histamine. Two quantitative, highly sensitive methods were used, an enzymatic method and HPLC, to quantify the histamine produced by LAB. Finally, an improved PCR test was carried out to detect the presence of histidine decarboxylase gene in these bacteria. The species exhibiting the highest frequency of histamine production is Oenococcus oeni. However, the concentrati…
