"Dybbuk" by Michal Waszynski (1937): between magic and mysticism
2020
International audience; Dybbuk, in the folklore of Hassidic Jews in Eastern Europe, is a spirit of a dead man who takes possession of the body of the person to whom he was attached in his lifetime. Michal Waszynski's "The Dybbuk", shot in Poland in 1937, set on stage this figure, based on the play by Sholem An-Ski, a Russian ethnographer, and on the expressionist aesthetics. Waszynski's film is a fiction witness that contains traces of the existence of Yiddish culture and the magical beliefs of Eastern European Jews before the Second World War, from which the legend of Dybbuk is originated. Our article questions the images of magic and mysticism present in Waszynski's film in order to appre…
Flow perturbations: a tool to study and characterize heterogeneous deformation
2005
The classification of the myriad of small-scale structures that are used in tectonic analysis is presently based on their geometry, which makes it difficult to discover transitions and groups amongst them. An alternative would be to classify structures according to the flow type by which they form, but this is difficult. Although most structures form by heterogeneous flow, modelling studies are often focussed on bulk homogeneous flow, since the mathematical treatment of heterogeneous flow is cumbersome. Also, heterogeneous deformation patterns seem to occur in as many types as there are small-scale structures. This paper introduces the use of the geometry of flow perturbations to improve ou…
A heuristic model-based approach for compensating wind effects in ski jumping.
2021
Wind influences the jump length in ski jumping, which raises questions about the fairness. To counteract the wind problem, the International Ski Federation has introduced a wind compensation system in 2009: time-averaged wind velocity components tangential to the landing slope are obtained from several sites along the landing slope, and these data are used in a linear statistical model for estimating the jump length effect of wind. This is considered in the total score of the ski jump. However, it has been shown that the jump length effect estimates can be inaccurate and misleading. The present manuscript introduces an alternative mathematical wind compensation approach that is based on an …
On the zero crossing of the three-gluon vertex
2016
We report on new results on the infrared behaviour of the three-gluon vertex in quenched Quantum Chormodynamics, obtained from large-volume lattice simulations. The main focus of our study is the appearance of the characteristic infrared feature known as 'zero crossing', the origin of which is intimately connected with the nonperturbative masslessness of the Faddeev-Popov ghost. The appearance of this effect is clearly visible in one of the two kinematic configurations analyzed, and its theoretical origin is discussed in the framework of Schwinger-Dyson equations. The effective coupling in the momentum subtraction scheme that corresponds to the three-gluon vertex is constructed, revealing t…
Ghost propagator and ghost-gluon vertex from Schwinger-Dyson equations
2013
We study an approximate version of the Schwinger-Dyson equation that controls the nonperturbative behavior of the ghost-gluon vertex in the Landau gauge. In particular, we focus on the form factor that enters in the dynamical equation for the ghost dressing function, in the same gauge, and derive its integral equation, in the "one-loop dressed" approximation. We consider two special kinematic configurations, which simplify the momentum dependence of the unknown quantity; in particular, we study the soft gluon case and the well-known Taylor limit. When coupled with the Schwinger-Dyson equation of the ghost dressing function, the contribution of this form factor provides considerable support …
Forward dijets in proton-nucleus collisions at next-to-leading order: the real corrections
2021
Using the CGC effective theory together with the hybrid factorisation, we study forward dijet production in proton-nucleus collisions beyond leading order. In this paper, we compute the "real" next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections, i.e. the radiative corrections associated with a three-parton final state, out of which only two are being measured. To that aim, we start by revisiting our previous results for the three-parton cross-section presented in our previous paper. After some reshuffling of terms, we deduce new expressions for these results, which not only look considerably simpler, but are also physically more transparent. We also correct several errors in this process. The real NLO …
