East Asia in the Global Economy: Theoretical and Empirical Questions for Marxism

As Marxism and socialism pass through watershed years it is important to reflect on the abiding questions of Marxist theory and empirical analysis. This article takes up this task in the context of East Asia under the impetus of globalisation and neo-liberalism, introducing a collection of five articles collected in the special issue. The article shows that questions Marx posed about the global economy more than a century ago remain prescient and continue to animate cutting-edge research, as shown in the articles in this special issue.
Balancing ‘flexibility’ and ‘employability’: The changing role of general studies in the Finnish and Swedish VET curricula of the 1990s and 2010s

This article analyses and compares the evolving role of general subjects in the curricula of initial upper secondary vocational education and training (VET) in Finland and Sweden during the 1990s and 2010s. The research illustrates how Bernstein’s concept of ‘pedagogic code’ supports comparative studies on principles guiding changes to curricula and how the role of general studies in VET has been redefined. The findings show that while a principle of ‘market relevance’ has been central to VET over the decades since the 1990s, it has been subject to varying interpretations. Celem artykułu jest pogłębiona analiza wizerunku kobiet w polskiej reality TV, przeprowadzona przy użyciu kategorii biopolityki Michela Foucaulta, uzupełnionej przez myśl Marksowską i marksistowską. Tekst składa się z trzech rozdziałów. Pierwszy dotyczy show Superniania, które pomogło zwrócić uwagę na kwestię biowładzy w sferze reprodukcji. Drugi rozdział omawia show randkowe, Hotel Paradise i Love Island. Wyspa Miłości, poruszając zagadnienia seksu i miłości. Ostatnia część skupia się na programie Damy i wieśniaczki, który pokazuje klasowy wymiar sprawowania biowładzy nad kobietami.

In contemporary societies we are witnessing an expansion of the messages of human capital. These messages have as their central dimension idea of the self-entrepreneur, which implies a deepening in the logic of activation, while blurring the wage relations. In this scenario, young people with university degrees are becoming a favourite target in the offensive of human capital. The penetration of these human capital messages can be seen in the discourses of young university students who have been forced to leave the country during the crisis.
