Telehealth in Urology: A Systematic Review of the Literature. How Much Can Telemedicine Be Useful During and After the COVID-19 Pandemic?

2020

Context Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused increased interest in the application of telehealth to provide care without exposing patients and physicians to the risk of contagion. The urological literature on the topic is sparse. Objective To perform a systematic review of the literature and evaluate all the available studies on urological applications of telehealth. Evidence acquisition After registration on PROSPERO, we searched PubMed and Scopus databases to collect any kind of studies evaluating any telehealth interventions in any urological conditions. The National Toxicology Program/Office of Health Assessment and Translation Risk of Bias Rating Tool for Human and A…

Clinical pathways for urology patients during the COVID-19 pandemic

2020

The public health emergency caused by the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in a significant reallocation of health resources with a consequent reorganization of the clinical activities also in several urological centers. A panel of Italian urologists has agreed on a set of recommendations on pathways of pre-, intra- and post-operative care for urological patients undergoing urgent procedures or non-deferrable oncological interventions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Simplification of the diagnostic and staging pathway has to be prioritized in order to reduce hospital visits and consequently the risk of contagion. In absence of strict uniform regulations that impose th…

Cross-Cultural Validity of the Physical Self-Description Questionnaire: Comparison of Factor Structures in Australia, Spain, and Turkey

2002

Abstract We evaluated the cross-cultural generalizability of the factor structure for the Physical Self-Description Questionnaire (PSDQ) using confirmatory factor analysis. The factor structure was reasonably invariant over large samples of responses by Australian, Spanish, and Turkish students. Consistent with a priori predictions, the factor structures based on Australian and Spanish high school students were somewhat more similar to each other than to those based on Turkish university students, but these differences were small. Psychometric, theoretical, cross-cultural, and practical considerations support the PSDQ's usefulness in a variety of research and applied settings. The study als…

Complications in radical cystectomy and their prevention

1995

We wish to dedicate this review article on radical cystectomy, its complications and their prevention to the memory of Prof. Luciano Giuliani. The article is based on a work written originally by Jim Montie and many other authors for the consensus meeting on bladder cancer held in Antwerp in 1994 and recently published in a booklet entitled “Global strategy for bladder cancer” (1). With the consent of Montie and the other co-authors, we have prepared on updated Italian version, inserting some parts (such as vascular complications) which were treated more superficially in the preliminary text.

Role of antibiotic prophylaxis in antenatal hydronephrosis: A systematic review from the European Association of Urology/European Society for Paediat…

2017

Summary Background The benefits and harms of continuous antibiotic prophylaxis (CAP) versus observation in patients with antenatal hydronephrosis (ANH) are controversial. Objective The aim was to determine the effectiveness of CAP for ANH, and if beneficial to determine the best type and regimen of antibiotic and the most harmful to provide guidance for clinical practice. Methods A systematic literature search was performed in databases including Medline, Embase, and Cochrane in June 2015. The protocol was prospectively registered to PROSPERO (CRD42015024775). The search started from 1980, when maternal ultrasound was first introduced into clinical practice. Eligible studies were critically…

Risk factors for residual disease at re-TUR in a large cohort of T1G3 patients

2021

Item does not contain fulltext Introduction and objectives: The goals of transurethral resection of a bladder tumor (TUR) are to completely resect the lesions and to make a correct diagnosis in order to adequately stage the patient. It is well known that the presence of detrusor muscle in the specimen is a prerequisite to minimize the risk of under staging. Persistent disease after resection of bladder tumors is not uncommon and is the reason why the European Guidelines recommended a re-TUR for all T1 tumors. It was recently published that when there is muscle in the specimen, re-TUR does not influence progression or cancer specific survival. We present here the patient and tumor factors th…

Model-Based Decision Support System for Individual Prescription of the Dialysate Bicarbonate Concentration in Hemodialysis

1992

A decision support system has been developed that determines the optimal dialysate bicarbonate concentration in hemodialysis therapy for each patient individually. The knowledge about the behavior of the acid-base state during treatment has been provided by a mathematical model for the description of dynamic exchange processes during hemodialysis. This model simulates the sodium and water distribution, the acid-base state as well as the ventilation. The decision support system uses the model for the prediction of the end-dialysis acid-base state and calculates by means of linear optimization the dialysate bicarbonate concentration which is necessary to reach a specified end-dialysis state.…

Urethroplasty with dorsal buccal mucosa graft. Is it still the method of choice in long term urethral stenosis?

2017

The aim of our work was to evaluate the long-term changes in symptoms (median 42 months) and to analyze data for any negative predictive factors for the application of the procedure, in patients who underwent to urethroplasty with dorsal buccal mucosa graft. During the period from 2010 to 2015 27 patients were examined. Than they underwent urethroplasty using dorsal buccal mucosa graft (graft of 4 x 2.5 cm). The evaluation of symptoms has been addressed through the application of the IPSS Quality of Life Questionnaire (International Prostatic Symptoms Score) and the evaluation of urinary flow has been carried out by a comparative analysis between the pre- and post-operative uroflowmetry. As…
