Morphology of experimentally denervated and reinnervated rat facial muscle I. Histochemical and histological findings

The morphological changes in rat facial muscles were evaluated after permanent denervation and were compared with findings after immediate reinnervation. Thirty rats underwent transection of the left and right facial nerves immediately followed by hypoglossal-facial nerve anastomosis on the right side (muscular reinnervation) and removal of 8-10 mm of the facial plexus on the left side (permanent muscular denervation). Levator labii muscle samples of both sides were collected sequentially at 2, 6, 7, 10, 20, and 24 weeks after surgery and submitted to routine histological and enzyme histochemical staining procedures. The use of texture analysis to study the time course of chromatolysis

Image analysis of the textural feature entropy of the Nissl substance was used to monitor the time course of chromatolysis in regenerating hypoglossal motoneurons and degenerating facial motoneurons 4-112 days after hypoglossal-facial anastomosis in rats. Changes in the Nissl substance were detected that were not obvious on the basis of subjective judgement of the light-microscopical appearance of the neurons. Chromatolysis started 4 days post operation (dpo) and was not reversed at 112 dpo in both nuclei. [EN] The hydrolysis of diethylcyanophosphonate, DCNP (a Tabun simulant) in the presence of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) has been studied in acetonitrile:water (99.5:0.5 v/v) mixtures using 31P NMR as a suitable technique to follow the DCNP hydrolysis. MSN alone was not capable to induce DCNP hydrolysis, yet MSN in combination with the presence of the bases potassium carbonate, triethylamine or DABCO enhanced DCNP degradation. When MSN was used combined with K2CO3, a hydrolysis of ca. 95% of the initial DCNP after 60 min was observed. Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by a progressive loss of the spinal motoneurons. The SMA-determining gene has been termed survival motor neuron (SMN) and is deleted or mutated in over 98% of patients. The encoded gene product is a protein expressed as different isoforms. In particular, we showed that the rat SMN cDNA produces two isoforms with Mr of 32 and 35 kDa, both localized in nuclear coiled bodies, but the 32 kDa form is also cytoplasmic, whereas the 35 kDa form is also microsomal. Background: Neurofibromas are sporadic or associated with type 1 neurofibromatosis (NF1), with a higher risk of malignant progression. Materials and Methods: We investigated CD10 immunoexpression in 39 peripheral nerve sheath lesions. They were 18 typical, solitary, sporadic neurofibromas (group A) and 21 cases (group B) consisting of 11 NF1-associated cases, 3 malignant peripheral sheath tumors (MPNST) and 8 atypical neurofibromas. Results: CD10 immunopositivity was absent or very weak and focal in group A. On the contrary, CD10 was strongly expressed in group B, including all the MPNST and their metastases, with 95% sensitivity and 72% specificity in distinguishing between the two groups.…

Imaging studies are scarce and report contradictory low prevalence of enhancement compared to clinical studies of cranial neuropathy.
