Early onset of deformation in the neutron-deficient polonium isotopes

In-source laser spectroscopy has been performed at CERN-ISOLDE with the RILIS laser ion source on Po-191-204,Po-206,Po-208-211,Po-216,Po-218. New information on the beta decay of Po-199 were extracted in the process, challenging previous results. Large-scale atomic calculations were performed to extract the changes in the mean-square charge radius delta from the isotope shifts. The delta for the even-A isotopes reveal a large deviation from the spherical droplet model for N < 116.

Indoor Fast Neutron Generator for Biophysical and Electronic Applications

This study focuses the attention on an indoor fast neutron generator for biophysical and electronic applications. More specifically, the findings obtained by several simulations with the MCNP Monte Carlo code, necessary for the realization of a shield for indoor measurements, are presented. Furthermore, an evaluation of the neutron spectrum modification caused by the shielding is reported. Fast neutron generators are a valid and interesting available source of neutrons, increasingly employed in a wide range of research fields, such as science and engineering. Approaching the precursor nuclei of the third r-process peak with RIBs

The rapid neutron nucleosynthesis process involves an enormous amount of very exotic neutron-rich nuclei, which represent a theoretical and experimental challenge. Two of the main decay properties that affect the final abundance distribution the most are half-lives and neutron branching ratios. Using fragmentation of a primary $^{238}$U beam at GSI we were able to measure such properties for several neutron-rich nuclei from $^{208}$Hg to $^{218}$Pb. This contribution provides a short update on the status of the data analysis of this experiment, together with a compilation of the latest results published in this mass region, both experimental and theoretical. Sensitivity of one-neutron knockout of halo nuclei to their nuclear structure

Halo nuclei are located far from stability and exhibit a very peculiar structure. Due to their very short lifetime, they are often studied through reactions. Breakup reactions are of particular interest since their cross sections are large for these loosely-bound nuclei. Inclusive measurements of breakup--also called knockout reactions--have even higher statistics. The aggregation behaviour of PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymers in water and in water + chlorinated additive mixtures was studied by means of fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Hydration dependent dynamics in sol-gel encapsulated myoglobin.

In this work we study the effect of hydration on the dynamics of a protein in confined geometry, i.e. encapsulated in a porous silica matrix. Using elastic neutron scattering we investigate the temperature dependence of the mean square displacements of non-exchangeable hydrogen atoms of sol-gel encapsulated met-myoglobin. The study is extended to samples at 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5 g water/g protein fractions and comparison is made with met-myoglobin powders at the same average hydration and with a dry powder sample. Thermal evolution of the CO stretching band in carboxy-myoglobin in the light of neutron scattering and molecular dynamics simulations

Abstract As it is well known, the thermal behaviour of the CO stretching band in MbCO reflects the interconversion among protein’s taxonomic and lower tier substates. We compare here FTIR data on the thermal behaviour of the CO stretching band in MbCO embedded in non-liquid, water–trehalose matrixes, and neutron scattering data on dry and hydrated proteins and nucleic acids. Neutron-Induced Effects on a Self-Refresh DRAM

International audience; The field of radiation effects in electronics research includes unknowns for every new device, node size, and technical development. In this study, static and dynamic test methods were used to define the response of a self-refresh DRAM under neutron irradiation. The neutron-induced effects were investigated and characterised by event cross sections, soft-error rate, and bitmaps evaluations, leading to an identification of permanent and temporary stuck cells, single-bit upsets, and block errors.
