Broadband X-ray spectral variability of the pulsing ULX NGC 1313 X-2
2021
[Context] It is thought that ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are mainly powered by super-Eddington accreting neutron stars or black holes as shown by the recent discovery of X-ray pulsations and relativistic winds. [Aims] This work presents a follow-up study of the spectral evolution over two decades of the pulsing ULX NGC 1313 X-2 in order to understand the structure of the accretion disc. The primary objective is to determine the shape and nature of the dominant spectral components by investigating their variability with the changes in the source luminosity. [Methods[ We performed a spectral analysis over the canonical 0.3-10.0 keV energy band of all the high signal-to-noise XMM-Newton…
IGR J17503–2636: a candidate supergiant fast X-ray transient
2019
IGR J17503-2636 is a hard X-ray transient discovered by INTEGRAL on 2018 August 11. This was the first ever reported X-ray emission from this source. Following the discovery, follow-up observations were carried out with Swift, Chandra, NICER, and NuSTAR. We report in this paper the analysis and results obtained from all these X-ray data. Based on the fast variability in the X-ray domain, the spectral energy distribution in the 0.5-80 keV energy range, and the reported association with a highly reddened OB supergiant at ~10 kpc, we conclude that IGR J17503-2636 is most likely a relatively faint new member of the supergiant fast X-ray transients. Spectral analysis of the NuSTAR data revealed …
Aperiodic variability of low-mass X-ray binaries at very low frequencies
2003
We have obtained discrete Fourier power spectra of a sample of persistent low-mass neutron-star X-ray binaries using long-term light curves from the All Sky Monitor on board the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. Our aim is to investigate their aperiodic variability at frequencies in the range 1 x 10^{-7}-5 x 10^{-6} Hz and compare their properties with those of the black-hole source Cyg X-1. We find that the classification scheme that divides LMXBs into Z and atoll sources blurs at very low frequencies. Based on the long-term (~ years) pattern of variability and the results of power-law fits (P ~ v^{-a}) to the 1 x 10^{-7}-5 x 10^{-6} Hz power density spectra, low-mass neutron-star binaries fall…
Determination of phosphorus by instrumental neutron activation and bremsstrahlung measurement in bone samples
1997
A non destructive method based on the31P(n,γ)32P reaction for the assay of phosphorus in bone samples is described. This method involves a thermal neutron irradiation of 2 minutes in a reactor followed by the measurement of the bremsstrahlung produced by the β− of32P in a Ge-detector surrounded by an anti-Compton shield. Accuracy and precision were tested by analysing the certified NIST 1486 Bone Meal reference material and tri-calcium phosphate (Ca3(PO4)2) samples. The value obtained for the reference material was in good agreement with the certified value and with relative standard deviation of 4.1% the precision was acceptable. The value obtained for Ca3(PO4)2 shows a deviation of −6% fr…
Mono- and Multi-Layers
2006
Thin films incorporating or consisting of calixarenes have been widely investigated. The capacity of such films to adsorb both ions and neutral species has engendered particular interest in their use in sensor devices. Semiconductors, non-linear optical and pyroelectric materials or switchable systems for data storage are further examples of their potential use [1]. Both monoand multi-layer films can be formed from calixarenes and resorcarenes, using a variety of techniques. This chapter deals with the fundamental basis of calixarene thin film applications, including film formation and characterisation as well as studies of selectivity in small molecule interactions. Real and potential appl…
High-resolution physisorption techniques for the characterization of adsorbents and catalysts
1991
Abstract High-resolution physisorption techniques performed in the continuous volumetric mode have been developed to investigate the surface and pore structure properties of porous solids. Physisorption data on well-defined microporous solids (zeolites and aluminophosphates) provide novel information on the mechanism of micropore filling, the behavior of the adsorbed phase and the pore structure of the adsorbent. The combination of physisorption with high-resolution analytical techniques such as calorimetry and neutron diffraction further expands our knowledge and understanding of physisorption processes. The results are not only important for fundamental research but can be applied in the …
Maintenance Operation on AGN-201 “COSTANZA” Nuclear Research Reactor of Palermo University
2015
During operations with AGN-201 “COSTANZA” nuclear research reactor of Palermo University a failure of a compensated boron-lined ionization chamber provided with a measurement channel was highlighted. A maintenance program aimed to verify the operative conditions of all measurement systems was then started. It was easy to identify as cause of the malfunction a seepage of water inside the container of a Westinghouse WL 6377 ion chamber due to a lack of watertight closure. This can be attributed to corrosion of the container due to parasitic currents circulating between the container, the chamber and the reactor tank that acts as electrical ground of the system. In this work we refer over main…
Hydroxo Hydrido Complexes of Iron and Cobalt (Sn−Fe−Sn, Sn−Co−Sn): Probing Agostic Sn⋅⋅⋅H−M Interactions in Solution and in the Solid State
2000
Bis(toluene)iron 9 reacts with Lappert's stannylene [Sn[CH(SiMe3)2]2] (4) to form the paramagnetic bis-stannylene complex [[(eta6-toluene)Fe-Sn-[CH(SiMe3)2]2]2] (10). Compound 10 reacts with H2O to form the hydroxo hydrido complex [(eta6-C7H8)(mu-OH)(H)-Fe-[Sn[CH(SiMe3)2]2]2] (12) in high yield; its solid-state structure has been elucidated by X-ray and neutron diffraction analysis. In agreement with the 1H NMR results, 12 contains a hydridic ligand whose exact coordination geometry could be determined by neutron diffraction. The 1H and 119Sn NMR analysis of 12 suggested a multicenter Sn/Sn/H/Fe bonding interaction in solution, based on significantly large values of J(Sn,H,Fe) = 640+/-30 Hz…
