In this dissertation, I study national campaigns aimed at constructing Estonian national identity in 1934–1940. The campaigns were organized through the cooperation of Konstantin Päts’ authoritarian government and civil society. I focus on the folk art campaign and on the name changing campaign. The name changing campaign was the largest national project in Estonia, aiming at the Estonification of names. Initially, the campaign focused on changing individuals’ surnames and first names, but later also on changing the names of places, streets and properties. Artikkelin tutkimuskohteena ovat Itä-Helsingissä asuvat somalialaistaustaiset nuoret. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan somalialaistaustaisten nuorten omassa asuinympäristössään käyttämää paikannimistöä sekä nimistöhaastattelujen tavoitteita ja tuloksia. Tutkimuksen aineistona on viiden iältään 12–17-vuotiaan somalialaistaustaisen haastattelut, jotka on tehty vuonna 2008. Haastattelut ovat olleet ryhmähaastatteluja, joissa nuoret keskustelevat omasta asuinympäristöstään. Tukiaineistona on käytetty sekä aikuisten somalialaistaustaisten että suomalaistaustaisten itähelsinkiläisten haastatteluja. Tarkastelen pro gradu -tutkielmassani kunnan nimen merkitystä kunnan asukkaille. Tarkoituksenani on syventää ymmärrystä siitä, miksi kunnan nimi aiheuttaa paljon keskustelua kuntaliitoksen toteuttamisen aikana. Tutkielmaani varten keräsin Kouvolan seudun uuden kunnan nimeä käsitteleviä tekstiviestikommentteja Kouvolan Sanomien Napakat-mielipidepalstalta. Viestien analysoinnissa käytin lähilukua sekä tulkitsevaa diskurssianalyysia. Teoreettisena viitekehyksenä tutkielmassani toimivat kuntasamaistumisen ja psykologisen omistajuuden käsitteet.
