New ECCO model documents for Material Deposit and Transfer Agreements in compliance with the Nagoya Protocol

2020

The European Culture Collections Organisation presents two new model documents for Material Deposit Agreement (MDA) and Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) designed to enable microbial culture collection leaders to draft appropriate agreement documents for, respectively, deposit and supply of materials from a public collection. These tools provide guidance to collections seeking to draft an MDA and MTA, and are available in open access to be used, modified, and shared. The MDA model consists of a set of core fields typically included in a deposit form to collect relevant information to facilitate assessment of the status of the material under access and benefit sharing (ABS) legislation. It a…

Prediction of soil texture distributions using VNIR-SWIR reflectance spectroscopy

2013

Abstract Reflectance spectroscopy provides an alternate method to non-destructively characterize key soil properties. Different approaches, including chemometrics techniques or specific absorption features, have been proposed to estimate soil properties from visible and near-infrared (VNIR, 400-1200 nm) and shortwave infrared (SWIR, 1200-2500 nm) reflectance domains. The main goal of this study was to test the performance of two distinct methods for soil texture estimation by VNIR-SWIR reflectance measurements: i) the Continuum Removal (CR) technique that was used to correlate specific spectral absorption features with clay, silt and sand content, and ii) the Partial Least-Squares Regressio…

Prelaunch assessment of worldview-3 information content

2014

The upcoming WorldView-3 satellite is designed to collect unique data by combining very-high spatial resolution (VHR) with observation bands in the short wave infrared (SWIR) in addition to the visible and near-infrared (VNIR) multispectral and panchromatic bands currently available on the VHR WorldView-2 system. These SWIR bands were specifically selected in order to target unique reflectance and absorption features presented by various surface materials and should, therefore, significantly improve the platforms information content for many image mining applications. This presentation explores the information content available to the WorldView-3 platform in two ways. First, second-order st…

Concurrent Changes of Brain Functional Connectivity and Motor Variability When Adapting to Task Constraints

2018

In behavioral neuroscience, the adaptability of humans facing different constraints has been addressed on one side at the brain level, where a variety of functional networks dynamically support the same performance, and on the other side at the behavioral level, where fractal properties in sensorimotor variables have been considered as a hallmark of adaptability. To bridge the gap between the two levels of observation, we have jointly investigated the changes of network connectivity in the sensorimotor cortex assessed by modularity analysis and the properties of motor variability assessed by multifractal analysis during a prolonged tapping task. Four groups of participants had to produce th…

New Cloud Detection Algorithm for Multispectral and Hyperspectral Images: Application to ENVISAT/MERIS and PROBA/CHRIS Sensors

2006

This work presents a new methodology that faces the problem of accurate identification of location and abundance of clouds in multispectral images acquired by space-borne sensors working in the visible and near-infrared (VNIR) spectral range. The amount of images acquired over the globe every day by the instruments on board Earth Observation satellites makes inevitable that many of these images present cloud covers. The objective of this work is to develop and validate a method that takes advantage of the high spectral and radiometric resolution, and the specific band locations (e.g. the oxygen band) of present multispectral sensors to increase the cloud detection accuracy. Moreover, the me…

Direct seeding mulch-based cropping increases both the activity and the abundance of denitrifier communities in a tropical soil

2009

International audience; This study evaluated the impact of direct seeding mulch-based cropping (DMC), as an alternative to conventional tilling (CT), on a functional community involved in N cycling and emission of greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O). The study was carried out for annual soybean/rice crop rotation in the Highlands of Madagascar. The differences between the two soil management strategies (direct seeding with mulched crop residues versus tillage without incorporation of crop residues) were studied along a fertilization gradient (no fertilizer, organic fertilizer, organic plus mineral fertilizers). The activity and size of the denitrifier community were determined by denitrifica…

Pyrazolium- and 1,2-Cyclopentadiene-Based Ligands as σ-Donors: a Theoretical Study of Electronic Structure and Bonding

2012

A high-level theoretical investigation of 1,2-cyclopentadiene (4) was performed using density functional theory and wave function methods. The results reveal that, in contrast to earlier assumptions, the ground state of this ephemeral “allene” is carbene-like with a small diradical component. Furthermore, the electronic structure and chemistry of 4 are found to parallel that of 1,2,4,6-cycloheptatetraene: both molecules possess a low-lying excited singlet state with a closed-shell carbenic structure, enabling rich coordination chemistry. Energy decomposition analyses conducted for currently unknown metal complexes of 4 as well as those involving stable carbenes based on the pyrazolium frame…

PREDICTION OF HARVEST TIME IN PEACH [PRUNUS PERSICA (L.) BATSCH] FRUIT USING THE DA-METER

2015

The aim of this work was to define the most appropriate time of harvesting early ripening peach fruit using destructive and non-destructive quality indexes such as the index of absorbance (IAD), measured with the DA-Meter, a portable equipment able to measure the degradation of chlorophyll in the pericarp. In this context our research was carried out in 2009 and 2010 on several peach cultivars. Total soluble solid content increased while flesh firmness and total acidity decreased with IAD values, but no significant correlation was found between destructive and non-destructive parameters.

Characterization of denitrification gene clusters of soil bacteria via a metagenomic approach

2009

International audience; Denitrification is a microbial respiratory process contributing to the emission of greenhouse gas. The study of denitrifying bacteria, like that of others, is hindered by characteristics that can prevent up to 99% of soil bacteria from being cultivated in vitro. New approaches based on the direct extraction of DNA from the natural environment and PCR amplifications can overcome limitations due to bacterial unculturability, but until now their application to denitrification genes has led only to the recovery of partial sequences for some of these genes. Our goals in this study were to apply a metagenomic approach characterized by cloning of DNA extracted from soil and …
