Effect of nitrogen fertilizer level on quality and shelf-life of fresh cut Swiss chard

2018

Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris L. var. cicla L.) is a leafy vegetable highly appreciated in some areas for its nutritional properties and year round supply. Its production area is not commercially important, but this minor vegetable offers an interesting enlargement of the current vegetable assortment by using its stalks and leaves. Swiss chard is a very nutritive demanding species. The content of mineral elements, total quality and yield are influenced by the amount, frequency and method of fertilization. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of high or low levels of nitrogen fertilization on the quality and shelf-life of minimally processed Swiss chard. Plants grown with a high (18…

Modulation of protein tyrosine nitration and inflammatory mediators by isoprenylhydroquinone glucoside.

2007

The nitration of tyrosine caused by peroxynitrite and other reactive nitrogen species is clearly detrimental for some physiological processes; however, its signalling role is still open to controversy. Among the natural phenolics known for their ability to oppose free tyrosine nitration, isoprenylhydroquinone glucoside is investigated due to its unusual structure, which contains a simple hydroxybenzene alkylated by a hemiterpenoid moiety. This hydroquinone was shown to be an effective inhibitor of peroxynitrite-induced protein tyrosine nitration in 3T3 fibroblasts. When tested on bovine seroalbumin nitration, however, the potency was reduced by half and the effect was almost abolished in th…

Doxycycline Reduces Mortality to Lethal Endotoxemia by Reducing Nitric Oxide Synthesis via an Interleukin‐10‐Independent Mechanism

1998

It was demonstrated that doxycycline protected BALB/c mice injected intraperitoneally with bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) against lethal septic shock. Doxycycline (at 1.5 mg/kg) exerted its protective effect by inhibiting nitrate production by an interleukin-10-independent mechanism. Experiments carried out in vitro also indicated that doxycycline inhibited NO synthesis by LPS-activated macrophages without inducing any significant modification in interleukin-10 release. These data suggest that the direct inhibition of nitrate release is the main mechanism of the antiinflammatory activity of doxycycline in septic shock.

Interaction of dicaffeoylquinic derivatives with peroxynitrite and other reactive nitrogen species.

2008

Plant phenolic antioxidants, among them catechins and hydroxycinnamoyl conjugates, constitute a well defined class of inhibitors of reactive nitrogen species (RNS). To gain deeper insight in this field, we examined the effects of 3,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (DCA), its methyl ester (DCE) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) in nitrative and oxidative processes. These compounds were found to be strong inhibitors of the nitration of tyrosine residues induced by ONOO- in bovine seroalbumin, with their IC50 values (10-40 microM) notably decreasing in the presence of bicarbonate. When studied on the intracellular protein tyrosine nitration induced by ONOO- in cultured murine fibroblasts as well a…

Water vapour pressure above saturated salt solutions at low temperatures

1999

Abstract The properties of water–salt systems in relation to their vapour pressure are studied especially at low temperature. The water vapour pressure of saturated salt solutions of strontium chloride, zinc chloride, nickel chloride, nickel nitrate, magnesium chloride, magnesium bromide, magnesium nitrate, calcium chloride, potassium nitrite, lithium chloride, lithium bromide, lithium iodide and sodium bromide are measured in a temperature range −40 to +10°C. The apparatus used in this study, is well adapted to measure very low pressure with an uncertainty of pressure measurement of 2% for a range between 10−3 and 10 mm Hg. The experimental values are fitted by Antoine equation with mean p…

Partitioning of nanoparticle-originated dissolved silver in natural and artificial sediments

2017

Sediments are believed to be a major sink for silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in the aquatic environment, but there is a lack of knowledge about the environmental effects and behavior of AgNPs in sediments. The release of highly toxic Ag+ through dissolution of AgNPs is one mechanism leading to toxic effects in sediments. We applied an ultrasound-assisted sequential extraction method to evaluate the dissolution of AgNPs and to study the partitioning of dissolved Ag in sediments. Silver was spiked into artificial and 2 natural sediments (Lake Hoytiainen sediment and Lake Kuorinka sediment) as silver nitrate (AgNO3 ), uncoated AgNPs, or polyvinylpyrrolidone-coated AgNPs (PVP-AgNPs). In addition,…

Global distributions of diazotrophs Gamma-A nifH genes abundance - Depth integrated values computed from a collection of source datasets - Contributi…

2013

The MAREDAT atlas covers 11 types of plankton, ranging in size from bacteria to jellyfish. Together, these plankton groups determine the health and productivity of the global ocean and play a vital role in the global carbon cycle. Working within a uniform and consistent spatial and depth grid (map) of the global ocean, the researchers compiled thousands and tens of thousands of data points to identify regions of plankton abundance and scarcity as well as areas of data abundance and scarcity. At many of the grid points, the MAREDAT team accomplished the difficult conversion from abundance (numbers of organisms) to biomass (carbon mass of organisms). The MAREDAT atlas provides an unprecedente…

The SGLT2 inhibitor empagliflozin improves the primary diabetic complications in ZDF rats

2017

Hyperglycemia associated with inflammation and oxidative stress is a major cause of vascular dysfunction and cardiovascular disease in diabetes. Recent data reports that a selective sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i), empagliflozin (Jardiance®), ameliorates glucotoxicity via excretion of excess glucose in urine (glucosuria) and significantly improves cardiovascular mortality in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The overarching hypothesis is that hyperglycemia and glucotoxicity are upstream of all other complications seen in diabetes. The aim of this study was to investigate effects of empagliflozin on glucotoxicity, β-cell function, inflammation, oxidative stress and endothel…

Midostaurin upregulates eNOS gene expression and preserves eNOS function in the microcirculation of the mouse

2005

Nitric oxide (NO) derived from endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) is a powerful vasodilator and possesses vasoprotective effects. Therefore, augmentation of eNOS expression and -activity by pharmacological means could provide protection against cardiovascular disease. However, this concept has been questioned recently, because in several disease models, eNOS upregulation was associated with a dysfunctional enzyme (referred to as eNOS uncoupling). In contrast, the present study demonstrates that an eNOS gene expression-enhancing compound with additional protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitory properties can upregulate eNOS while preserving its enzymatic function. Apolipoprotein E-knockout mice were tr…

Heme oxygenase-1: a novel key player in the development of tolerance in response to organic nitrates.

2007

Objective— Nitrate tolerance is likely attributable to an increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) leading to an inhibition of the mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH-2), representing the nitroglycerin (GTN) and pentaerythrityl tetranitrate (PETN) bioactivating enzyme, and to impaired nitric oxide bioactivity and signaling. We tested whether differences in their capacity to induce heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) might explain why PETN and not GTN therapy is devoid of nitrate and cross-tolerance. Methods and Results— Wistar rats were treated with PETN or GTN (10.5 or 6.6 μg/kg/min for 4 days). In contrast to GTN, PETN did not induce nitrate tolerance or cross-tolerance as assess…
