Background: Halogenated volatile anesthetics (HVAs) are considered to be inhibitors of nitric oxide synthase (NOS). On other hand, NO mediates the vasodilation produced by HVAs. Thus, both increase and decrease of NO concentration in brain tissues are possible during anesthesia.
