Recycled crustal carbon in the depleted mantle source of El Hierro volcano, Canary Islands
2021
The Canary Islands, in the eastern Atlantic, are among the most enigmatic Oceanic Island provinces on Earth, as the mantle source feeding its volcanism exhibits wide spatial heterogeneity and a multiplicity of sources. Multi-isotope whole-rock studies have long revealed the presence of a recycled oceanic crust/lithosphere component in the mantle source. However, noble gas systematics have been more challenging to interpret, and the available carbon isotope data is limited and cannot support/dismiss this interpretation. Here, we present the very first isotopic characterisation of CO2 and noble gases (He-Ne-Ar) in fluid inclusions (FI) in minerals hosted in mantle xenoliths from El Hierro, th…
Cardenales y "nobleza eclesiástica" en Italia, entre ficción y biografía (siglos XVI-XVII)
2016
The literature on cardinals examined in this article (writings on conclaves, biographies, funeral orations and relations, as well as descriptions of funeral apparati) demonstrate an ostentatious prevalence of the “purple” on the “blood”, of the ecclesiastical nobility on the honour of the lineage, of the genealogy of the Church on that of the family trees. Such prevalence was of course rhetoric within a system that made the kinship relationships as its strength and had a noble social block behind itself. The exception of some cardinals or popes of humble birth, indeed, confirmed the rule of the patrician or aristocratic descent of the majority of them. In this regard, as Peter Burke (2001) …
Electrosynthesis of Ce–Co Mixed Oxide Nanotubes with High Aspect Ratio and Tunable Composition
2008
Cerium oxide and cobalt oxides have attracted the interest of several researchers due to their potential application in several technological fields electrochromism, lithium batteries, catalysis, etc.. Ceria has been used as a promoter in the so-called “three-way catalyst” for the control of toxic emission from automobile exhaust. The promotion consists of the enhancement of the noble metal dispersion, as well as stabilization of the supporting medium toward thermal sintering. 1,2 A direct catalytic effect of CeO2 in chemical processes such as water–gas shift reaction or NOx decomposition has been also evidenced. 3,4

Superatomic S2 Silver Clusters Stabilized by a Thiolate–Phosphine Monolayer: Insight into Electronic and Optical Properties of Ag14(SC6H3F2)12(PPh3)8…
2014
The electronic structure of two recently crystallographically solved, thiolate–phosphine protected silver clusters Ag14 and Ag16 are analyzed via density functional theory (DFT) and their optical excitations are analyzed from time-dependent DFT perturbation theory. Both clusters can be characterized as having the S2 free-electron configuration in the metal core, which is the first time such a configuration is confirmed for structurally known ligand-protected noble metal clusters. However, their different core shapes and ligand layer induce significantly different optical spectra. Performance of gradient-corrected DFT functionals is discussed and it is shown that the asymptotically correct L…
Semiconducting Clathrates Meet Gas Hydrates: Xe24[Sn136]
2014
Semiconducting Group 14 clathrates are inorganic host–guest materials with a close structural relationship to gas hydrates. Here we utilize this inherent structural relationship to derive a new class of porous semiconductor materials: noble gas filled Group 14 clathrates (Ngx[M136], Ng=Ar, Kr, Xe and M=Si, Ge, Sn). We have carried out high-level quantum chemical studies using periodic Local-MP2 (LMP2) and dispersion-corrected density functional methods (DFT-B3LYP-D3) to properly describe the dispersive host–guest interactions. The adsorption of noble gas atoms within clathrate-II framework turned out to be energetically clearly favorable for several host–guest systems. For the energetically…
Improving the photocatalytic H2 evolution activity of Keggin polyoxometalates anchoring copper-azole complexes
2021
Eliminating the use of precious metals as cocatalysts and using visible light are two important aspects in the field of photocatalytic H2 evolution with polyoxometalates (POMs) as photosensitizers. Here we present two new POM-based materials: [CuII5(2-ptz)6(H2O)4(GeW12O40)]·4H2O (1) and [CuI2(ppz)4][H2GeW12O40]·8H2O (2) (2-ptz = 5-(2-pyridyl) tetrazole, ppz = 3-(pyrid-4-yl) pyrazole) synthesized with the Keggin type [GeW12O40]4− (GeW12) polyanion and copper-azole complexes. The optimum photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of compound 1 without a noble metal cocatalyst is 3813 μmol g−1 h−1, which is 7.6 times higher than that of compound 2 and more than 27 times higher than that of bare GeW12 po…

Realization of administration unit for3He with gas recycling
2011
Hyperpolarized (HP) noble gases (3He,129Xe) are used for MR-imaging of the lung. In the majority of case the HP gas is filled in Tedlarbags and directly inhaled by the patients. Starting from an earlier pilot device, an administration unit was built respectively to the Medical Devices Law to administer patients HP noble gas boli in defined quantities and at a predefined time during inspiration with high reproducibility and reliability without reducing MR-quality. The patient's airflows are monitored and recorded. It is possible to use gas admixtures, measure the polarization on-line and collect the exhaled gas for later recycling. The first images with healthy volunteers were taken with thi…
