THE INNER TERRITORIES: FROM THE MARGINS TO COSMOPOLITAN CENTRES

2021

The article proposes a reflection on the cosmopolitanism linked to the “marginalised” parts of Italy, where social, economic, and infrastructural decline and the consequent abandonment of places are met with stories of renewal in which the relationship between inhabitants and foreigners constitutes the basis for starting local development processes able to activate new urban networks based on cultural interaction and to generate resilient relations, welcoming processes, and new communities. In this new “cosmopolitan nomadism”, we can recognise an opportunity for territories and communities to regenerate spatial and social relations: innovation and culture, permanent exchange, and neutral en…

2017

A reflection on a travel to Sicily by Maupassant becomes an occasion to discuss the category continuous/discontinuous and the symmetric notion of beginning. The starting question is: how can we define a beginning? To answer this question, I adopt a double strategy: on the one side, I resort to some specialists in this field (Lotman, Said, Aragon and Gracq) who allow me – by deferring to some other concepts, authors and theories – to focus on the notion of existence itself and on the nomadism of thinking developed by Deleuze; on the other hand, I concentrate more analytically on a beginning by Maupassant and on a beginning by Malinowski in order to underline the importance of interdisciplina…

Modeling temporal and spatial colony‐site dynamics in a long‐lived seabird

2003

We studied the determinants of colony site dynamics in Audouin's gull, Larus audouinii, breeding in a small archipelago of the western Mediterranean. Data on island occupation were available for a series of 25 years, since first colonization of the archipelago in 1973. Group behavior was studied in relation to the components of dispersal: permanence or abandonment (extinction) on an island previously occupied and permanence or occupation (colonization) of another island. Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMMs) were used to identify the relative contribution of each explanatory variable to the probability of colony abandonment. Gulls showed a low probability (3%) of abandoning one of the isl…

Grasslands and Shrublands of Kazakhstan and Middle Asia

2020

Kazakhstan and Middle Asia comprise 4 million km2 of plains, uplands and tall mountain ranges in the core of the Eurasian continent. The region’s semi-arid climate, grazing pressure by wild and domestic ungulates, and long pastoral tradition, have given rise to a variety of open habitat types and a distinct flora and fauna. Grasslands and shrublands are a natural and dominant vegetation type in the forest-steppe and steppe zone of northern and central Kazakhstan, as part of the Eurasian grassland biome. In Middle Asia, grasslands and shrublands are widespread habitat types in the Tian Shan, Pamir-Alai and Pamir—mountain systems that have been recently acknowledged as a global biodiversity h…

Once raised that the pulse of the dialogia constitutes the existence and the practice of any language as common territory between speaker and …
