Addenda et emendanda to the "A catalogue of plants growing in Sicily"

2009

Corrections and integrations to the “A Catalogue of the plants growing in Sicily” by Giardina & al. (2007) are here reported. In particular, several disregarded taxa have been added and updated together with new other ones described or reported simultaneously or subsequently to the date of publication of the Catalogue. Finally nomenclature of some taxa has been updated and a new taxonomic status has been proposed for two of them.

Typification of Dioscorea communis and its synonym Tamus communis var. subtriloba (Dioscoreaceae)

2016

The typification of Dioscorea communis (≡ Tamus communis, Dioscoreaceae) is discussed. The designation of the nomenclatural type is based on the consultation of Linnaeus’s original material preserved at LINN, the Clifford Herbarium at BM, the Herbarium Joachim Burser at UPS, and the literature cited in the protologue. The name is lectotypified using a herbarium sheet preserved at LINN. A lectotype is also selected for the name Tamus communis var. subtriloba, from a specimen preserved at the Gussone’s herbarium at NAP.

REINSTATEMENT OF THE DINOFLAGELLATE GENUS Tripos TO REPLACE Neoceratium, MARINE SPECIES OF Ceratium (DINOPHYCEAE, ALVEOLATA)

2013

Morphological and molecular data support the split at the genus level of the marine and freshwater species of the dinoflagellate Ceratium (Gonyaulacales, Dinophyceae). A new genus name Neoceratium F. Gomez, D. Moreira & P. Lopez-Garcia was proposed for the marine species. However, it is considered illegitimate (type species is type of Biceratium Vanhoffen), and the nomenclatural priority is here given for the genus Tripos Bory (type species Tripos muelleri ) which replaces Neoceratium . New combinations are proposed for the existing names of species and infraspecific taxa. Types of names of Orobanche taxa described from North Africa

2013

In the framework of the revision of the genus Orobanche (including Phelipaea) in the Mediterranean area, the original material for 31 names of new taxa described from North Africa by Ball, Battandier, Forsska°l, Maire (partly with Emberger and Jahandiez), Persoon, Poiret and Pomel has been analysed. Typification is discussed, and where necessary types are designated. Accepted names and synonyms of the recognized taxa are given. Three species are illustrated, and one new combination (O. inexspectata) is proposed.

On the real identity of the Strelitzia cultivated in Sicily’s historic gardens

2016

The authors, on the basis of field observations and literature search, conclude that all tree-like plants of Strelitzia grown in Sicily belong to Strelitzia nicolaii. Therefore Strelitzia alba (= Strelitzia augusta), which was generally considered to be commonly cultivated in Sicily since the nineteenth century, if it ever was cultivated on the island, is not currently found there. The Lectotypes of the names S. nicolaii and S. alba are here designated.

Sella, A NEW NAME FOR THE GENUS Linaresia EL KADIRI, 1992 (NASSELLARIA, RADIOLARIA) PREOCCUPIED BY COPEPOD CRUSTACEANS (LAMIPPIDAE, MAXILLOPODA)

2021

The aim of this short note is to create a new name of this genus since the original name Linaresia proved to pre-exist in the paleontological literature ( Linaresia de Zulueta, 1908, Family Lamippidae, Copepod crustaceans, and Linaresia Gonzalez-Donoso, 1968, Family Gavelinellidae, Agglutinated Foraminifera). The new name created for the above mentioned radiolarians is: Sella . This name derives from an arbitrary combination of letters (International Code of Zoological Nomenclature). The type species of Sella is S. beniderkoulensis by original designation (El Kadiri, 1992).
