Recent advances in the application of innovative food processing technologies for mycotoxins and pesticide reduction in foods

2020

Abstract Background Agricultural products are a vital component of the human diet. However, these products can be contaminated by health-threatening pesticides and mycotoxins due to improper farming and storage practices. Besides, pesticide pollution can be also regarded as environmental pollution and pesticide reduction is among the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While these hazardous chemicals are stable during several traditional food processing, innovative food processing technologies, including high-pressure processing (HPP), pulsed electric fields (PEF), cold plasma (CP), supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2), and ultrasound (USN) processing, have been found to have good potent…

Experimental and Emerging Free Fatty Acid Receptor Agonists for the Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes

2022

The current management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) includes incretin-based treatments able to enhance insulin secretion and peripheral insulin sensitivity as well as improve body mass, inflammation, plasma lipids, blood pressure, and cardiovascular outcomes. Dietary Free Fatty Acids (FFA) regulate metabolic and anti-inflammatory processes through their action on incretins. Selective synthetic ligands for FFA1-4 receptors have been developed as potential treatments for T2DM. To comprehensively review the available evidence for the potential role of FFA receptor agonists in the treatment of T2DM, we performed an electronic database search assessing the association between FFAs, T2DM, i…

Phase Equilibria in the Binary and Ternary Systems Composed of Diethyl Ketone, 2-Pentanone, and 3-Pentanol at 101.3 kPa

2003

New vapor−liquid equilibrium data for the binary systems diethyl ketone + 2-pentanone, diethyl ketone + 3-pentanol and 2-pentanone + 3-pentanol and for the diethyl ketone + 2-pentanone + 3-pentanol ternary system are reported at 101.3 kPa. The data were found to be thermodynamically consistent according to the Van Ness−Byer−Gibbs method for the binary systems and according to the McDermott−Ellis method for the ternary one. The experimental results show that the diethyl ketone + 2-pentanone system is well represented by assuming ideal behavior. The other binary systems exhibit slight positive deviations from ideality, and no azeotrope is present. The VLE data have been correlated with the Wi…

Trienediolates of hexadienoic acids in synthesis. synthesis of retinoic and nor-retinoic acids.

1993

Abstract Double deprotonation of either (E,E)-3-methyl-2,4-hexadienoic acid 2, or 4,6-dimethyldihydro-2-pyrone 3 generates apparently the same lithium trienediolate, which affords ω-hydroxy acids 9 on reaction with ketones 7. Hydroxy acids 9 are easily dehydrated to octatrienoic acids 5, which are structurally related to retinoic acid. Similarly, sorbic acid 1 leads to nor-retinoic acid analogs 6.

4-hydroxynonenal inhibits glutathione peroxidase: protection by glutathione

1999

Abstract 4-Hydroxy-2,3-trans-nonenal, a lipid peroxidation product, inhibits glutathione peroxidase in a concentration-dependent manner. The concentration providing 50% inhibition is 0.12 mM. This inhibition can be almost completely (89%) prevented by 1 mM glutathione added to the incubation mixture 30 min before 4-hydroxy-2,3-trans-nonenal or 2,3-trans-nonenal, but not by other thiol-containing antioxidants such as 0.5 mM dithiothreitol or β-mercaptoethanol. Again the addition of 1 mM glutathione, and not of 0.5 mM dithiothreitol or β-mercaptoethanol, to the enzyme 30 min after incubation with 4-hydroxy-2,3-trans-nonenal restores activity to the same extent as does the preincubation with G…
