Second harmonic generation in selenium-metal structures

The article examines the processes of second harmonic generation (SHG) when selenium-metal (Cu) film structures are illuminated by femtosecond radiation (180 fs, 80 MHz) at wavelength 800 – 1000 nm. Selenium-copper structures were obtained by successive thermal evaporation of selenium and copper onto the glass substrate in vacuum. Microanalysis of the film composition was performed to determine amount of copper in thin films. The as-evaporated selenium-copper structures were crystallised by annealing in inert atmosphere at temperature 85°C. Just evaporated as well as annealed thin films were explored. Tellurites fibers for infrared supercontinuum sources : opto-geometric profiles and extrinsic absorptions management

This PhD thesis work focuses on the synthesis and purification of vitreous materials used for the development of waveguides with varied profiles, dedicated to supercontinuum (SC) generation between 1 and 5 μm.Concerning the purification of tellurite glasses, several leads were followed, but best results are obtained for the purification of the TeO2-ZnO-Na2O glassy system by the means of zinc fluoride. Attenuation measurements performed on several meter-long single-index fiber samples reveal the nearly complete elimination of water-related absorptions between 3 and 4 μm (OH ions concentration lower than 1 ppm mass.). Polarization Modulation Instability in All-Normal Dispersion Microstructured Optical Fibers With Quasi-Continuous Pump

We report the experimental observation of the polarization modulation instability (PMI) effect in all-normal dispersion (ANDi) microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) with quasi-continuous pumping. The small unintentional birefringence (~10-5), that any realistic non-polarization maintaining MOF exhibits, contributes to this nonlinear effect. PMI can produce two sidebands whose polarization state is orthogonal to the polarization of the pump. In this work, only one type of PMI process is observed, i.e., when the pump is polarized along the slow axis of the fiber and sidebands are generated in the fast axis mode. Novel second-order nonlinear optical polymer materials containing indandione derivativatives as a chromophore

Second order non linear optical (NLO) properties of sPMMA based host-guest systems containing eight dimethylaminobenzylidene -1, 3 - indandione (DMABI) related chromophores have been investigated by means of quantum chemical calculations and SHG experimental characterization. Ab initio calculations with basis set 6-31G were used for molecular geometry determination as well as in the calculations of molecular hyperpolarizability by FF approach. This thesis has two goals: the first one is to improve the control techniques in quantum mechanics, and more specifically in NMR, by using the tools of geometric optimal control. The second one is the study of the influence of Hamiltonian singularities in controlled systems. The chapter about optimal control study three classical problems of NMR : the inversion problem, the influence of the radiation damping term, and the steady state technique. A fiber-based limiter at 170 Gbit/s for all-optical regeneration

We report the numerical and experimental studies of a spectrally filtered fiber-based optical limiter at 170 Gbit/s. The device, including less than 1 km-long of highly nonlinear optical fiber and a 3 nm-width filter, exhibits good performance at an average input power of 14.5 dBm. No power penalty has been observed and a strong robustness against optical noise has been demonstrated.

Spatial beam cleaning in quadratic nonlinear medium

We show experimentally that a laser beam scrambled by propagation in a short segment of multimode fiber may be cleaned by the nonlinear propagation in KTP cristal with type-II second-harmonic generation.

Wave dynamics and turbulence in multimode optical systems

The subject of this thesis essentially focuses on the experimental and theoretical study of optical turbulence in different types of nonlinear media. The first part of the manuscript is devoted to the study of thermalization and condensation of optical waves during their propagation in graded-index multimode fibers. The analysis based on the wave turbulence theory reveals that the disorder inherent to light propagation in an optical fiber induces a significant acceleration of the process of optical thermalization, which can clarify the mechanism of certain regimes of spatial beam cleaning recently reported in the literature. Second- and third-harmonic generation as a local probe for nanocrystal-doped polymer materials with a suppressed optical breakdown threshold

Abstract Second- and third-harmonic generation processes are shown to allow the detection of absorptive agglomerates of nanocrystals in transparent materials and the visualization of optical breakdown in nanocomposite materials. Correlations between laser-induced breakdown and the behavior of the second- and third-harmonic signals produced in SiC/PMMA nanocomposite films are studied. The potential of second- and third-harmonic generation for the on-line visualization of laser breakdown in nanocomposite polymer materials is revealed, with the ablative material removal being monitored by the decay of the second- and third-harmonic signals. Optical characterization of YCa4O(BO3)3 and Nd:YCa4O(BO3)3 crystals

International audience; We report a complete optical characterization of YCa4O(BO3)3 and Nd:YCa4O(BO3)3 crystals. We studied the relative orientation between the dielectric and the crystallographic frames as a function of the wavelength and performed accurate phase-matching angles measurements for second harmonic generation, using a single crystal cut as a sphere. We also recorded polarized luminescence spectra of Nd:YCOB along the principal axes of the dielectric frame.
