Mean field methods in large amplitude nuclear collective motion

1984

The time dependent Hartree-Fock method (TDHF) is reviewed and its success and failure are discussed. It is demonstrated that TDHF is a semiclassical theory which is basically able to describe the time evolution of one-body operators, the energy loss in inclusive deep inelastic collisions, and fusion reactions above the Coulomb barrier. For genuine quantum mechanical processes as e.g. spontaneous fission, subbarrier fusion, phase shifts and the description of bound vibrations, the quantized adiabatic time dependent Hartree-Fock theory (quantized ATDHF) is suggested and reviewed. Realistic three-dimensional calculations for heavy ion systems of A1+A2<32 are presented. Applications to various …

Lifetime Measurements of Excited States in Pt172 and the Variation of Quadrupole Transition Strength with Angular Momentum

2018

Lifetimes of the first excited 2(+) and 4(+) states in the extremely neutron -deficient nuclide Pt-172 have been measured for the first time using the recoil-distance Doppler shift and recoil-decay tagging techniques. An unusually low value of the ratio B(E2: 4(1)(+) -> 2(1)(+)/B(E2: 2(1)(+) -> 0(gs)(+)) = 0.55(19) was found, similar to a handful of other such anomalous cases observed in the entire Segre chart. The observation adds to a cluster of a few extremely neutron -deficient nuclides of the heavy transition metals with neutron numbers N approximate to 90-94 featuring the effect. No theoretical model calculations reported to date have been able to explain the anomalously low B(E2: 4(1…

First measurement of the helicity-dependent γ p↦pη differential cross-section

2003

The helicity dependence of the (γ) over right arrow(p) over right arrow -+ peta reaction has been measured for the first time at a center-of-mass angle theta(eta)*= 70degrees in the photon energy range from 780 MeV to 790 MeV. The experiment, performed at the Mainz microtron MAMI, used a 4pi-detector system, a circularly polarized, tagged photon beam. and a longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target. The helicity 3/2 cross-section is found to be small and the results for helicity 1/2 agree with predictions from the MAID analysis.

Discovery of an Exceptionally Strong β -Decay Transition of F20 and Implications for the Fate of Intermediate-Mass Stars

2019

A significant fraction of stars between 7 and 11 solar masses are thought to become supernovae, but the explosion mechanism is unclear. The answer depends critically on the rate of electron capture on ^{20}Ne in the degenerate oxygen-neon stellar core. However, because of the unknown strength of the transition between the ground states of ^{20}Ne and ^{20}F, it has not previously been possible to fully constrain the rate. By measuring the transition, we establish that its strength is exceptionally large and that it enhances the capture rate by several orders of magnitude. This has a decisive impact on the evolution of the core, increasing the likelihood that the star is (partially) disrupte…

Phänomenologische Betrachtung zur Photon-Elektron-Wechselwirkung in einem Plasma

1961

The question at stake is, whether a simple physical connection may be found between Richardson equation for thermionic emission on the one hand, and Richardson equation for photoelectric emission on the other hand. The proposition of such a connection is based on the following supposition: that electrons are not only elements of a (Fermi-Dirac-) statistical ensemble and, as such, cause thermionic phenomena; but that they can also interact with a radiation field, thereby causing an additional emission current, according to Richardson (photoelectric) equation. — It is shown in detail that the current emitted from a metal of 2000 °K is determined by the complete radiation of this metal only to…

Structure of rotational bands in 253No

2009

In-beam gamma-ray and conversion electron spectroscopic studies have been performed on the 253 No nucleus. A strongly coupled rotational band has been identified and the improved statistics allows an assignment of the band structure as built on the $\ensuremath 9/2^-[734]_{\nu}$ ground state. The results agree with previously known transition energies but disagree with the tentative structural assignments made in earlier work.

New features in systematics of low-spin states in even106?120Cd

1990

Low- spin states in even106–112Cd and116Cd were investigated by in-beam and off-beam γ-ray and conversion electron spectroscopy. New spin assignments and decay branching ratios for the levels in106Cd,108Cd and110Cd were obtained. From the new systematical data for the even106–120Cd, it is inferred that two sets of low-lying 0+ states cross between114Cd and116Cd. One of these sets appears to have features of both intruder and two-quadrupole-phonon states.

Electron recombination with tungsten ions with open f-shells

2017

We calculate the electron recombination rates with target ions W$^{q+}$, $q = 18$ -- $25$, as functions of electron energy and electron temperature (i.e. the rates integrated over the Maxwellian velocity distribution). Comparison with available experimental data for W$^{18+}$, W$^{19+}$, and W$^{20+}$ is used as a test of our calculations. Our predictions for W$^{21+}$, W$^{22+}$, W$^{23+}$, W$^{24+}$, and W$^{25+}$ (where the experimental data are not available) may be used for plasma modelling in thermonuclear reactors. The results for the temperature dependent rates for each ion are fitted with the standard analytical expressions to make them easy to use. All of these ions have an open e…

3-D Shielding Analyses of the Vertical and Mid-Plane Ports in ITER

1996

A three dimensional (3-D) shielding analysis of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) has been performed with the aim of calculating the nuclear heating on the magnet system, correlating it to the existing vertical and horizontal ports. When these openings are left unshielded, more than 50 kW are calculated for the upper half of Toroidal Field Coil system and two of the Poloidal Field Coils. A simple plug, with same thickness as of the vacuum vessel can lower the heating to meet the imposed requirements. 5 refs., 6 figs., 4 tabs.

Stability of gyrotron operation in very high-order modes

2012

This study was motivated by the desire to increase the power, which can be delivered by gyrotrons in long pulse and continuous regimes. Since the admissible power level is determined by the density of ohmic losses in resonator walls, to increase the radiated power a gyrotron should operate in higher order modes. Using an existing gyrotron developed for plasma experiments in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor as a base model, the stability of operation of such a gyrotron in modes with larger number of radial variations was studied. It is shown that the power level achievable in such gyrotrons in stable single mode regimes is close to 1.5 MW. The power level 1.7–1.8 MW can b…
