Low-energy Neutrino Astronomy in LENA

2015

LENA (Low Energy Neutrino Astronomy) is a proposed next-generation neutrino detector based on 50 kilotons of liquid scintillator. The low detection threshold, good energy resolution and excellent background rejection inherent to the liquid-scintillator detectors make LENA a versatile observatory for low-energy neutrinos from astrophysical and terrestrial sources. In the framework of the European LAGUNA-LBNO design study, LENA is also considered as far detector for a very-long baseline neutrino beam from CERN to Pyhasalmi ¨ (Finland). The present contribution gives an overview LENA’s broad research program, highlighting the unique capabilities of liquid scintillator for the detection of low-…

Kompakti automatisoitu laser-ionisointijärjestelmä

2011

In an experimental nuclear physics off-line systems are often used in situations where acceleration energies are relatively small. Main benefits are low price and meager radiated laboratory enviroments. In this master’s thesis I discuss mostly about automation which was used in our off-line system. The system was built at the Ion Guide Separator On-Line facility (IGISOL) in Jyväskylä University. The automation set up was made with the Phoenix Contacts inline terminals, which were programmed by using the Labview program. The system consists of thermistor, skimmer handling, mirror handling, gasline parts per billion (ppb) mixing and quadrupole mass spectrometer measurement. There were major p…

Experimental investigations of the hypernucleus $_Λ^4$H

2015

International audience; Negatively charged pions from two-body decays of stopped _Lambda^4H hypernuclei were studied in 2012 at the Mainz Microtron MAMI, Germany. The momenta of the decay-pions were measured with unprecedented precision by using high-resolution magnetic spectrometers. A challenge of the experiment was the tagging of kaons from associated K^+∧ production off a Be target at very forward angles. In the year 2014, this experiment was continued with a better control of the systematic uncertainties, with better suppression of coincident and random background, improved particle identification, and with higher luminosities. Another key point of the progress was the improvemen…

Search for superheavy elements in monazites using chemical enrichment

1982

Evidence for the existence of superheavy elements in monazite inclusions embedded in Madagascan mica and surrounded by giant radioactive haloes was given by Gentry et al.1 who observed photons with energies corresponding to predicted Lα1 X-ray energies of element 126 (at 27.25 keV) and also of elements 116, 124 and 127 in irradiations of such crystals with collimated proton beams. For an unambiguous identification, the detection of further members of the L X-ray series would be most important. In X-ray spectra of monazite samples these transitions are buried under the strong K X-ray peaks of the lanthanide elements. They should, however, become visible after chemical enrichment of the super…

Accelerating Radioactive Ion Beams With REX-ISOLDE

2003

The post accelerator REX‐ISOLDE is installed at the ISOLDE facility at CERN, where a broad variety of radioactive ions can be addressed. Since the end of 2001 beams at the final energy of 2.2 MeV/u are available. REX‐ISOLDE uses a unique system of beam bunching and charge breeding. First a Penning trap accumulates and bunches the ions, which are delivered as a quasi‐continuous beam from the ISOLDE target‐ion‐source, and then an electron beam ion source (EBIS) charge‐breeds them to a mass‐to‐charge ratio below 4.5. This enables a very compact design for the following LINAC, consisting of a 4 rod RFQ, an IH structure and three 7‐gap‐resonators. The later ones allow a variation of the final en…

The Inchworm as a precision translator in a high magnetic field and UHV environment

1989

Abstract A new set-up has been designed and tested for on-line, high-precision mass measurements of short-lived radioactive isotopes via a determination of the ion cyclotron resonance. Ions delivered by the on-line isotope separator ISOLDE at CERN/Geneva are stored in a Penning trap installed in a superconducting solenoid. Due to severe space limitations in the bore of the solenoid, it is impossible to use conventional mechanical feedthroughs for the necessary manipulations inside the uhv chamber. Instead, a number of Inchworms, a high-precision positioning device based on the piezo-electric effect are employed. This publication reports on the first application of this device in a uhv envir…

Analysis of the XENON100 dark matter search data

2014

The XENON100 experiment, situated in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, aims at the direct detection of dark matter in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), based on their interactions with xenon nuclei in an ultra low background dual-phase time projection chamber. This paper describes the general methods developed for the analysis of the XENON100 data. These methods have been used in the 100.9 and 224.6 live days science runs from which results on spin-independent elastic, spin-dependent elastic and inelastic WIMP-nucleon cross-sections have already been reported.

Search for Spin-Dependent Short-Range Interaction with an 3He/129Xe Clock Comparison Experiment

2016

We performed an experiment to search for a new spin-dependent P- and T-violating nucleon–nucleon interaction [Formula: see text] which is mediated by light pseudoscalar bosons such as axions or axionlike particles. This interaction causes a shift [Formula: see text] in the precession frequency of nuclear spin polarized gases in the presence of an unpolarized mass. In order to measure this frequency shift a 3He/[Formula: see text]Xe comagnetometer was used which is based on the detection of free precession of 3He and [Formula: see text]Xe nuclear spins using SQUIDs as detectors. For the upper limit of [Formula: see text] we obtained 7.1[Formula: see text]nHz. With this value, an upper limit…

RAPTOR : A new collinear laser ionization spectroscopy and laser-radiofrequency double-resonance experiment at the IGISOL facility

2023

RAPTOR, Resonance ionization spectroscopy And Purification Traps for Optimized spectRoscopy, is a new collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy device constructed at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility at the University of Jyv\"askyl\"a, Finland. By operating at beam energies of under 10 keV, the footprint of the experiment is reduced compared to more traditional collinear laser spectroscopy beamlines. In addition, RAPTOR is coupled to the JYFLTRAP Penning trap mass spectrometer, opening a window to laser-assisted nuclear-state selective purification, serving not only the mass measurement program, but also supporting post-trap decay spectroscopy experiments. Finally,…

Resonance laser ionization developments for IGISOL-4

2012

The work presented in this thesis concentrates on the development of the FURIOS laser ion source towards e cient and selective production of low energy radioactive ion beams. This includes design and development of the ion guide and hot cavity catcher systems for laser ion source use, and the development of in-source and in-jet laser spectroscopy techniques. The work has been carried out at the IGISOL facility in the Accelerator laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä. The FURIOS facility was upgraded and developed during the move to the IGISOL-4 facility. The laser transport was greatly improved in order to allow a large fraction of the initial laser intensity to be transported into the …
