Study of the Ti44(α,p)V47 reaction and implications for core collapse supernovae

2014

The underlying physics triggering core collapse supernovae is not fully understood but observations of material ejected during such events helps to solve this puzzle. In particular, several satellite based γ-ray observations of the isotope 44Ti have been reported recently. Conveniently, the amount of this isotope in stellar ejecta is thought to depend critically on the explosion mechanism. The most influential reaction to the amount of 44Ti in supernovae is Ti44(α,p)V47. Here we report on a direct study of this reaction conducted at the REX-ISOLDE facility, CERN. The experiment was performed with a 44Ti beam at Elab = 2.16MeV/u, corresponding to an energy distribution, for reacting α-partic…

Relativistic effects and spin observables in deuteron electrodisintegration

1993

The influence of relativistic effects in deuteron electrodisintegration, in particular their manifestation in spin observables, is discussed. We have used a simple phenomenological approach by adding the lowest-order relativistic corrections to the nonrelativistic one-body current and including the kinematic wave-function boost. Furthermore, final-state interaction, meson-exchange currents and isobar configurations are included in order to study kinematic regions off the quasi-free case. Sizeable relativistic effects in many observables are found even at low energies.

Gamow-Teller Transitions and β-decay Half-life in Proton Rich pf-shell Nuclei

2010

In violent neutrino‐induced reactions at the core‐collapse stage of type II supernovae, Gamow‐Teller (GT) transitions starting from stable as well as unstable pf‐shell nuclei play important roles. In the β‐decay study of these unstable pf‐shell nuclei, half‐lives can be measured rather accurately. On the other hand, in high‐resolution (3He,t) charge‐exchange reactions at 0°, individual GT transitions up to high excitations can be studied. Assuming the isospin symmetry for the strengths of Tz = ±2→±1 analogous GT transitions, we present a “merged analysis” for the determination of GT transition strengths starting from proton‐rich Tz = −2 nuclei. We applied this analysis to the A = 52, T = 2 …

Absorptive effects inK+Λphotoproduction on nucleons and nuclei

1989

Incorporating final state correlation effects, we have reinvestigated the ..gamma.. /sup 1/H..-->..K/sup +/..lambda.. elementary process. Our model not only resolves the persisting trouble of the small KN..lambda.. coupling constant, but also yields agreement with cross section data at higher energies. Using our amplitudes, we calculate angular distributions for the reaction /sup 16/O(..gamma..,K/sup +/)/sub ..lambda..//sup 16/N . While the forward cross section increases with increasing energy, the total cross section is almost constant from E/sub ..gamma../ = 1.2 GeV through 2 GeV, suggesting that rather low photon energies hold promise for exploration of hypernuclear excitations.

Comparison of T[sub z] = ±1→0 GT Transitions

2010

Gamow‐Teller (GT) transitions can be studied in both β‐decay and charge exchange(CE) reactions. If isospin is a good quantum number, then the Tz = −1→0 and Tz = +1→0 GT mirror transitions, are identical. Therefore, a comparison of the results from studies of β decay and CE should shed light on this assumption. Accordingly we have studied the β decay of the Tz = −1 fp‐shell nuclei, 54Ni, 50Fe, 46Cr, and 42Ti, produced in fragmentation and we have compared our results with the spectra from (3He, t) measurements on the mirror Tz = +1 target nuclei studied in high resolution at RCNP, Osaka. The β‐decay experiments were performed as part of the STOPPED beam RISING campaign at GSI.

Gamow-Teller Transitions Starting from T[sub z] = +3∕2 Nucleus [sup 47]Ti

2011

Gamow‐Teller (GT) transitions are mediated by the στ operator. Owing to its simplicity and also its spin‐isospin nature, GT transitions play key roles in the studies of nuclear structure as well as astro‐nuclear processes. In violent neutrino‐induced reactions at the core‐collapse stage of type II supernovae, Gamow‐Teller (GT) transitions starting from stable as well as unstable pf‐shell nuclei play important roles. We study GT transitions starting from 47Ti in a high‐resolution (3He,t) charge‐exchange reactions at 0° and at an intermediate incident energy of 140 MeV/nucleon at Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Osaka. Individual GT transitions up to high excitations were observed.…

Actinide Production in Collisions ofU238withCm248

1982

Cross sections for the production of heavy actinides in damped collisions of $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ ions with $^{248}\mathrm{Cm}$ targets are reported and compared with similar data for other projectiles. The relatively small differences in the formation rates of a given isotope made by different projectiles indicate a balance between increased mass transfer probability with increasing projectile mass and a concurrent decrease in survivability because of an increase in excitation energy.

Search for Electron Antineutrino Appearance at theΔm2∼1  eV2Scale

2009

The MiniBooNE Collaboration reports initial results from a search for nu{sub m}u->nu{sub e} oscillations. A signal-blind analysis was performed using a data sample corresponding to 3.39x10{sup 20} protons on target. The data are consistent with background prediction across the full range of neutrino energy reconstructed assuming quasielastic scattering, 200<E{sub n}u{sup QE}<3000 MeV: 144 electronlike events have been observed in this energy range, compared to an expectation of 139.2+-17.6 events. No significant excess of events has been observed, both at low energy, 200-475 MeV, and at high energy, 475-1250 MeV. The data are inconclusive with respect to antineutrino oscillations suggested …

Operation of the r-process and cosmochronology

1993

Abstract The rapid neutron capture process produced about half of the heavy elements in nature beyond the Fe-peak. In the past quite a number of astrophysical sites have been suggested, but none of them has yet been uniquely identified. Without assuming a particular site or model, we deduce the conditions responsible for the production of r-process nuclei by making use of the following information: (1) the solar r-process abundances and (2) nuclear masses and beta decay half lives for nuclei far from stability - in particular experimental information near magic neutron numbers, which determines the shape of the r-process peaks. In addition, we review briefly galactic age determinations base…
