Beta-decay studies of far from stability nuclei near N = 28

1995

Abstract Beta-decay half-lives and β-delayed neutron-emission probabilities of the very neutron-rich nuclei 43 P, 42,44,45 S and 44–46 Cl, 47 Ar, which lie at or close to the N=28 magic shell, have been recently measured through β or β-n time correlation measurement. The results are compared to recent model predictions and indicate a rapid weakening of the N=28 shell effect below 48 Ca. The nuclear structure effects reflected in the decay properties of the exotic S and Cl isotopes may be the clue for the astrophysical understanding of the unusual 48 Ca 46 Ca abundance ratio measured in the solar system.

Study of medium-spin states of neutron-rich 87, 89, 91Rb isotopes

2019

International audience; Excited states of the rubidium isotopes$_{37}^{87, 89, 91}$Rb have been studied at the INFN Legnaro National Laboratory. Measurements of the $\gamma$ -ray decay of fragments produced in binary grazing reactions resulting from the interaction of a beam of 530 MeV$^{96}$Zr ions with a$^{124}$Sn target have been complemented by studies of the $\gamma$ -ray decay of fission fragments produced in the interaction of a beam of 230 MeV$^{36}$S ions with a thick$^{176}$Yb target. The structure of the yrast states of$_{37}^{87, 89, 91}$Rb has been discussed within the context of spherical shell-model and cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations.

The beta-decay of95Rb and97Rb

1983

Theβ-decay of 377 ms95Rb and 168ms97Rb has been thoroughly investigated by means ofγ-ray, conversion electron andβ-delayed neutron spectroscopy. More than 97% of theβ-decay to particle-bound states has been placed in level schemes of95Sr and97Sr. High-resolution neutron spectroscopic studies have allowed to extend the knowledge of the excitation spectra up to 9 MeV, respectively 10 MeV. The density of neutron-unbound levels in95Sr and97Sr has been derived from peak stripping analyses of the neutron spectra. Beta-strength functions (S β(E)) have been investigated in detail. They indicate that Gamow-Tellerβ-decay of both precursors is dominated by nuclear structure. The discovered pronounced …

Quasi-free scattering with 6,8He beams

2005

Abstract This paper presents the results of experimental investigations of ( p , p n ) , ( p , p α ) and ( p , p 6 He) reactions with relativistic 6 He and 8 He beams impinging on a hydrogen target. Information on the structure of extremely neutron-rich nuclei was obtained by using the unique characteristic of quasi-free scattering processes and inverse kinematics. For the first time, momentum distributions of complex clusters inside 6 He and 8 He were measured. Spectroscopic factors for valence neutrons, α - and 6 He clusters were deduced from the experimental data. They demonstrate that the filling of the p 1 2 shell is the essential feature of the 8 He structure. It is shown that the 8 H…

Beta decay studies of neutron-rich $_{21}$Sc-$_{27}$Co nuclei at GANIL

2002

Abstract The neutron-rich nuclei 2157,58Sc, 2258–60Ti, 2258–60Ti, 2360–62V, 2464–66Cr, 2564–68Mn, 2667–70Fe and 2769–71Co have been produced at Ganil via interactions of a 61.8 A.MeV 76Ge beam with a 58Ni target. Beta-decay studies have been achieved, bringing new half-lives and a better nuclear structure knowledge in this region. These results could help for understanding the overabundances of the neutron-rich stable 58Fe, 64Ni in certain inclusions of meteorites.

The Super-FRS Project at GSI

2002

The GSI projectile fragment separator FRS has demonstrated with many pioneering experiments the research potential of in-flight separators at relativistic energies. Although the present facility has contributed much to the progress in the field of nuclear structure physics, major improvements are desirable in the future. The characteristics of the proposed next-generation facility at GSI, the Super-FRS, will be presented and compared to other projects. The Super-FRS is a large-acceptance superconducting fragment separator followed by different experimental branches including a combination with a new storage-cooler ring system. This system consists of a collector ring (CR) and a new experime…

Lipkin method of particle-number restoration to higher orders

2014

Background: On the mean-field level, pairing correlations are incorporated through the Bogoliubov-Valatin transformation, whereupon the particle degrees of freedom are replaced by quasiparticles. This approach leads to a spontaneous breaking of the particle-number symmetry and mixing of states with different particle numbers. In order to restore the particle number, various methods have been employed, which are based on projection approaches before or after variation. Approximate variation-after-projection (VAP) schemes, utilizing the Lipkin method, have mostly been used within the Lipkin-Nogami prescription. Purpose: Without recurring to the Lipkin-Nogami prescription, and using instead st…

Magnetic and quadrupole moments of neutron deficient 58-62Cu isotopes

2011

Abstract This paper reports on the ground state nuclear moments measured in 58–62Cu using collinear laser spectroscopy at the ISOLDE facility. The quadrupole moments for 58–60Cu have been measured for the first time as Q ( Cu 58 ) = − 15 ( 3 ) efm 2 , Q ( Cu 59 ) = − 19.3 ( 19 ) efm 2 , Q ( Cu 60 ) = + 11.6 ( 12 ) efm 2 and with higher precision for 61,62Cu as Q ( Cu 61 ) = − 21.1 ( 10 ) efm 2 , Q ( Cu 62 ) = − 2.2 ( 4 ) efm 2 . The magnetic moments of 58,59Cu are measured with a higher precision as μ ( Cu 58 ) = + 0.570 ( 2 ) μ N and μ ( Cu 59 ) = + 1.8910 ( 9 ) μ N . The experimental nuclear moments are compared to large-scale shell-model calculations with the GXPF1 and GXPF1A effective i…

Collective features of Cr and Fe isotopes

2014

The question of the sudden increase of collectivity in neutron-rich nuclei when approaching $N=40$ has recently interested both experimentalists and theorists. In this paper we study the development of collectivity along the chromium and iron isotopic chains. The calculations are performed within two different perspectives, namely, the proton-neutron interacting boson model (IBM-2) and interacting shell model (ISM) and compared with the available experimental data. The onset of collectivity is studied through nuclear quantities and observables that suggest differences in the nuclear structure of Cr and Fe isotopical chains. Furthermore, a prediction for the shape transition from a spherical…

Interweaving of elementary modes of excitation in superfluid nuclei through particle-vibration coupling: Quantitative account of the variety of nucle…

2015

A complete characterization of the structure of nuclei can be obtained by combining information arising from inelastic scattering, Coulomb excitation, and $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-decay, together with one- and two-particle transfer reactions. In this way it is possible to probe both the single-particle and collective components of the nuclear many-body wave function resulting from the coupling of these modes and, as a result, diagonalizing the low-energy Hamiltonian. We address the question of how accurately such a description can account for experimental observations in the case of superfluid nuclei. Our treatment goes beyond the traditional approach, in which these properties are calculated …
