Epoxide Hydrolase Isoenzymes and their Individual Contribution to the Control of Toxic Metabolites

1991

Epoxides are highly strained three membered cyclic ethers which are formed in vivo by the microsomal cytochrome P450 dependent monooxygenases as intermediates of several important biosynthetic pathways (leukotriene A4, squalene 2, 3-oxide) and as metabolites of numerous xenobiotic compounds containing olefinic or aromatic double bonds. Further transformation of these epoxides may occur by either, rearrangement to phenols, aliphatic aldehydes, or ketones; by cytochrome P450 dependent reduction to the parent compound; or by spontaneous or enzymatic conjugation to gluta-thione. Epoxides may also bind covalently to cellular nucleophiles, such as proteins and nucleic acids thus eliciting carcino…

Revealing interactions between polyaza pyridinophane compounds and DNA/RNA polynucleotides by SERS spectroscopy

2014

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy (SERS) in the near-infrared region had been applied to study interactions of polyaza pyridinophanes with single stranded RNA and double stranded DNA and RNA polynucleotides. Studied compounds, PYPOD and PHENPOD, differed in the central aromatic moiety, pyridine and phenanthroline, respectively, which linked two cyclic amines. An intense scattering was obtained from molecules adsorbed onto the silver nanoparticles, showing nonlinear concentration dependence in the 6.5 × 10−8−6.5 × 10−5 M range. New bands in spectra of PYPOD/polynucleotide and PHENPOD/polynucleotide mixtures were assigned to vibrational modes of polynucleotide moieties involved i…

Fabry Disease With Concomitant Lewy Body Disease

2019

AbstractAlthough Gaucher disease can be accompanied by Lewy pathology (LP) and extrapyramidal symptoms, it is unknown if LP exists in Fabry disease (FD), another progressive multisystem lysosomal storage disorder. We aimed to elucidate the distribution patterns of FD-related inclusions and LP in the brain of a 58-year-old cognitively unimpaired male FD patient suffering from predominant hypokinesia. Immunohistochemistry (CD77, α-synuclein, collagen IV) and neuropathological staging were performed on 100-µm sections. Tissue from the enteric or peripheral nervous system was unavailable. As controls, a second cognitively unimpaired 50-year-old male FD patient without LP or motor symptoms and 3…

Comment on 'Analysis of decay chains of superheavy nuclei produced in the 249Bk + 48Ca and 243Am + 48Ca reactions'

2019

Zlokazov and Utyonkov (2017 J. Phys. G: Nucl. Part. Phys. 44 075107) question the validity of the methods and conclusions presented by Forsberg et al (2016 Nucl. Phys. A 953 117). In this comment, we argue that the criticism is invalid. nonPeerReviewed

The interaction of transition metal complexes with deoxyribonucleic acid

2011

B‐DNA structure and stability: the role of nucleotide composition and order

2022

Abstract We have quantum chemically analyzed the influence of nucleotide composition and sequence (that is, order) on the stability of double‐stranded B‐DNA triplets in aqueous solution. To this end, we have investigated the structure and bonding of all 32 possible DNA duplexes with Watson–Crick base pairing, using dispersion‐corrected DFT at the BLYP‐D3(BJ)/TZ2P level and COSMO for simulating aqueous solvation. We find enhanced stabilities for duplexes possessing a higher GC base pair content. Our activation strain analyses unexpectedly identify the loss of stacking interactions within individual strands as a destabilizing factor in the duplex formation, in addition to the better‐known eff…

Two-neutrino ββ decays and low-lying Gamow-Teller β− strength functions in the mass range A=70–176

2017

We apply the proton-neutron deformed quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pn-dQRPA) to describe the low-lying (E 6 MeV) 1+ Gamow-Teller (GT) strength functions in odd-odd deformed nuclei which participate as intermediate nuclei in two-neutrino double-β-decay (2νββ) transitions within the mass range A = 70–176. In deriving equations of motion we use a single-particle basis with projected angular momentum, provided by the diagonalization of a spherical mean field furnished with a quadrupole-quadrupole interaction. The schematic residual Hamiltonian contains pairing and proton-neutron interaction terms in particle-hole (ph) and particle-particle (pp) channels, with constant strengths. By …

Quantification of Coastal New Ultra-Fine Particles Formation from In situ and Chamber Measurements during the BIOFLUX Campaign

2005

Environmental Context. Secondary processes leading to the production of ultra-fine particles by nucle- ation are still poorly understood. A fraction of new particles formed can grow into radiatively active sizes, where they can directly scatter incoming solar radiation and, if partly water soluble, contribute to the cloud condensation nuclei population. New particle formation events have been frequently observed at the Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station (western Ireland), under low tide and sunny conditions, leading to the hypothesis that new particles are formed from iodo-species emitted from macroalgae. Abstract. New particle formation processes were studied during the BIOFLUX campaig…

New particle formation inside ice clouds: In-situ observations in the tropical tropopause layer of the 2017 Asian Monsoon Anticyclone

2021

Abstract. From 27 July to 10 August 2017 the airborne StratoClim mission took place in Kathmandu, Nepal where eight mission flights were conducted with the M-55 Geophysica up to altitudes of 20 km. New Particle Formation (NPF) was identified by the abundant presence of ultrafine aerosols, with particle diameters dp smaller than 15 nm, which were in-situ detected by means of condensation nuclei counting techniques. NPF fields in clear-skies as well as in the presence of cloud ice particles (dp > 3 µm) were encountered at upper troposphere/lowermost stratosphere (UT/LS) levels and within the Asian Monsoon Anticyclone (AMA). NPF-generated ultrafine particles in elevated concentrations (Nuf)…
