Measurement of the 151Sm n,gamma 152Sm cross section at n_TOF

2005

The 151 Sm(n, γ ) 152 Sm cross section, which is important for the interpretation of the 151 Sm branching as an s -process thermometer, was measured from 1 eV up to 1 MeV at the innovative n_TOF facility at CERN. Based on these data, the Maxwellian-averaged cross section at k T = 30  keV is found to be 3100±160 mb. This value can be used to constrain the thermodynamical conditions in Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars during He-shell burning.

HOW MANY FUSION BARRIERS?

2004

Fusion barrier distributions for the 20 Ne + 112,116,118 Sn systems have been extracted from quasi-elastic scattering cross sections measured at the Warsaw HIL Cyclotron. Results are compared to coupled-channels calculations performed with the CCFULL code. The overall widths of the distributions are reproduced on taking account of the low-lying collective states of the target and projectile but some puzzling discrepancies in their shapes remain to be explained.

rp-process nucleosynthesis at extreme temperature and density conditions

1998

We present nuclear reaction network calculations to investigate the influence of nuclear structure on the rp-process between Ge and Sn in various scenarios. Due to the lack of experimental data for neutron-deficient nuclei in this region, we discuss currently available model predictions for nuclear masses and deformations as well as methods of calculating reaction rates (Hauser-Feshbach) and beta-decay rates (QRPA and shell model). In addition, we apply a valence nucleon (NpNn) correlation scheme for the prediction of masses and deformations. We also describe the calculations of 2p-capture reactions, which had not been considered before in this mass region. We find that in X-ray bursts 2p-c…

Gamow-Teller Transitions in Proton Rich Exotic pf-shell Nuclei Deduced from Mirror Transitions

2010

The rp‐process nucleosynthesis proceeds through nuclei near the proton drip‐line, in which Gamow‐Teller (GT) transitions starting from unstable pf‐shell nuclei play important roles. In the β‐decay study of these nuclei, half‐lives can be measured rather accurately. On the other hand, in the high‐resolution (3He, t) charge‐exchange reactions on mirror nuclei, individual GT transitions can be studied up to high excitations. For the accurate study of the GT transition strengths in the A = 52, T = 2, system, we compare and combine the β‐decay study of the proton‐rich nucleus 52Ni and the 52Cr(3He, t) measurement assuming the isospin symmetry of the Tz = ±2→±1 transitions.

Measurement of the H2(p,γ)He3 S factor at 265–1094 keV

2021

Recent astronomical data have provided the primordial deuterium abundance with percent precision. As a result, big bang nucleosynthesis may provide a constraint on the universal baryon to photon ratio that is as precise as, but independent from, analyses of the cosmic microwave background. However, such a constraint requires that the nuclear reaction rates governing the production and destruction of primordial deuterium are sufficiently well known. Here, a new measurement of the $^{2}\mathrm{H}{(p,\ensuremath{\gamma})}^{3}\mathrm{He}$ cross-section is reported. This nuclear reaction dominates the error on the predicted big bang deuterium abundance. A proton beam of 400--1650 keV beam energy…

New High-Precision Measurement of the Reaction Rate of the 18O(p, α)15N Reaction via THM

2008

The 18O(p,alpha)15N reaction rate has been extracted by means of the Trojan-Horse method. For the first time the contribution of the 20-keV peak has been directly evaluated, giving a value about 35% larger than previously estimated. The present approach has allowed to improve the accuracy of a factor 8.5, as it is based on the measured strength instead of educated guesses or spectroscopic measurements. The contribution of the 90-keV resonance has been determined as well, which turned out to be of negligible importance to astrophysics.

Resurrection of large lepton number asymmetries from neutrino flavor oscillations

2016

We numerically solve the evolution equations of neutrino three-flavor density matrices, and show that, even if neutrino oscillations mix neutrino flavors, large lepton number asymmetries are still allowed in certain limits by Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN).

New Methods of Scalar Dark Matter Detection

2017

In this chapter, I consider new mechanisms for the induction of a cosmological evolution of the fundamental constants (such as the electromagnetic fine-structure constant \(\alpha \) and the particle masses) by dark matter. By investigating the effects of “slow drifts” and oscillating variations of the fundamental constants due to dark matter in astrophysical phenomena, including Big Bang nucleosynthesis and cosmic microwave background radiation measurements, and laboratory clock-comparison experiments, I derive new limits on certain interactions of dark matter with ordinary matter that improve on previous limits by up to 15 orders of magnitude, as well as the first ever limits on several o…

A CMB search for the neutrino mass mechanism and its relation to the Hubble tension

2020

AbstractThe majoron, a pseudo-Goldstone boson arising from the spontaneous breaking of global lepton number, is a generic feature of many models intended to explain the origin of the small neutrino masses. In this work, we investigate potential imprints in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) arising from massive majorons, should they thermalize with neutrinos after Big Bang Nucleosynthesis via inverse neutrino decays. We show that measurements of the CMB are currently sensitive to neutrino-majoron couplings as small as $$\lambda \sim 10^{-13}$$λ∼10-13, which if interpreted in the context of the type-I seesaw mechanism correspond to a lepton number symmetry breaking scale $$v_L \sim {\math…

Relic density of neutrinos with primordial asymmetries.

2008

We study flavor oscillations in the early Universe, assuming primordial neutrino-antineutrino asymmetries. Including collisions and pair processes in the kinetic equations, we not only estimate the degree of flavor equilibration, but for the first time also kinetic equilibration among neutrinos and with the ambient plasma. Typically, the restrictive big-bang nucleosynthesis bound on the nu(e)(nu) over bar (e) asymmetry indeed applies to all flavors as claimed in the previous literature, but fine-tuned initial asymmetries always allow for a large surviving neutrino excess radiation that may show up in precision cosmological data.
