Discovery of 157W and 161Os

2010

The nuclides W-157 and Os-161 have been discovered ill reactions of Ni-58 ion beams with a Cd-106 target. The Os-161 alpha-decay energy and half-life were 6890 +/- 12 keV and 640 +/- 60 mu s. The d ...

Structure And Decay Of Neutron-Rich Nuclides In The 115 ≤ A ≤ 138 Mass Range And r-Process Nucleosynthesis

2005

The structure and decay of neutron‐rich r‐process nuclides has been studied by a variety of means that take advantage of enhanced selectivity to permit identification of exotic nuclides. New level structures are presented for 134,135Sb along with data for Ag isomers and Cd yrast structures. Some of the properties measured play an important role in calculations of the yields of elements and isotopes produced in r‐process nucleosynthesis that takes place at high temperature in the presence of large densities of neutrons.

Extending Penning trap mass measurements with SHIPTRAP to the heaviest elements

2013

Penning-trap mass spectrometry of radionuclides provides accurate mass values and absolute binding energies. Such mass measurements are sensitive indicators of the nuclear structure evolution far away from stability. Recently, direct mass measurements have been extended to the heavy elements nobelium (Z=102) and lawrencium (Z=103) with the Penning-trap mass spectrometer SHIPTRAP. The results probe nuclear shell effects at N=152. New developments will pave the way to access even heavier nuclides.

Simulations of the stopping efficiencies of fission ion guides

2017

With the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility, located at the University of Jyväskylä, products of nuclear reactions are separated by mass. The high resolving power of the JYFLTRAP Penning trap, with full separation of individual nuclides, capacitates the study of nuclides far from the line of stability. For the production of neutron-rich medium-heavy nuclides, fissioning of actinides is a feasible reaction. This can be achieved with protons from an in-house accelerator or, alternatively, with neutrons through the addition of a newly developed Be(p,xn)-converter. The hereby-obtained fission products are used in nuclear data measurements, for example fission yields, nuclear …

Submillisecond On-Line Mass Separation of Nonvolatile Radioactive Elements: An Application of Charge Exchange and Thermalization Processes of Primary…

1985

Transportation of thermalized primary recoil ions from nuclear reactions by helium flow has been investigated as a means of injecting short-lived radioactive nuclides into an on-line isotope separator. Several short-lived radioactive isotopes of highly nonvolatile elements such as B, Sc, Nb, and W have been separated. The efficiency for heavy nuclides with half-lives above 1 ms is between 1 and 10%. The shortest-lived activity identified in an on-line separation is the 182-\ensuremath{\mu}s isomeric state in $^{207}\mathrm{Bi}$.

Mass measurements on stable nuclides in the rare-earth region with the Penning-trap mass spectrometer RIGA-TRAP

2011

The masses of 15 stable nuclides in the rare-earth region have been measured with the Penning-trap mass spectrometer TRIGA-TRAP. This is the first series of absolute mass measurements linking these nuclides to the atomic-mass standard $^{12}\mathrm{C}$. Previously, nuclear reaction studies almost exclusively determined the literature values of these masses in the Atomic-Mass Evaluation. The TRIGA-TRAP results show deviations on the order of 3--4 standard deviations from the latest published values of the Atomic-Mass Evaluation 2003 for some cases. However, the binding-energy differences that are important for nuclear structure studies have been confirmed and improved. The new masses are dis…

Study of Proton and 3He Induced Reactions on 235U at Low Energies

2014

Abstract Highly enriched 235 U targets were irradiated with 6.5 − 16.1 MeV protons and 20.4 − 42.0 MeV 3 He ions. The irradiated targets were measured with γ and α spectrometric methods to identify and quantify the produced reaction products. After primary activity measurements the targets were dissolved, and interesting Pu and Np reaction products were chemically separated from the target material, and measured for activity again. From the activity results it was possible to calculate the reaction cross sections for differently produced nuclides. The data obtained from the experiment resulted in earlier unknown excitation functions on proton and 3 He induced nuclear reactions on 235 U.

Search for stable octupole deformation in $^{225}$Fr

1996

Levels in $^{225}$Fr have been studied by $\gamma$-ray and conversion-electron spectroscopy following the $\beta$-decay of $^{225}$Rn, and by the $^{226}$Ra(t,$\alpha$)$^{225}$Fr single-proton-pickup reaction. Multipolarities were obtained for $\sim$ 50 $\gamma$-transitions, and a level scheme was established in which definite spin-parity values were determined for over 20 of the 48 levels. Although low-lying rotational bands of both parities exist for $K=1/2$ and $K=3/2$, there is no experimental evidence to claim these are parity doublets. E1 strengths connecting the $K^\pi=3/2^\pm$ bands are intermediate between those for nuclides which are reflection symmetric and those claimed to be oc…

isotracer: An R package for the analysis of tracer addition experiments

2021

AbstractTracer addition experiments, particularly using isotopic tracers, are becoming increasingly important in a variety of studies aiming at characterizing the flows of molecules or nutrients at different levels of biological organization, from the cellular and tissue levels, to the organismal and ecosystem levels. We present an approach based on Hidden Markov Models (HMM) to estimate nutrient flow parameters across a network, and its implementation in the R package isotracer. The isotracer package is capable of handling a variety of tracer study designs, including continuous tracer drips, pulse experiments, and pulse-chase experiments. It can also take into account tracer decay when radio…
